India vs Pakistan prediction: what the record and the Nisshin pitch say about the Asian Games final
India and Pakistan meet at the Asian Games for the first time, for gold in Nisshin on Saturday. India have won all nine T20Is against Pakistan in which they batted second, but Thursday’s semi-final points the other way.

India and Pakistan have never played each other at the Asian Games. That changes on Saturday, 3 October, when they meet for the men’s cricket gold at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan, at 10:30am IST. India are the defending champions. Pakistan are in an Asian Games final for the first time.
This is our India vs Pakistan prediction for the final, built on the 17 T20 internationals the two have played, the two semi-finals on Thursday and what a week of rain in Aichi has done to the pitch. One number from the head-to-head stands out, and it says the toss could matter more than usual.
India vs Pakistan Asian Games final: the details
| Detail | Final |

| Start | 2pm local, 10:30am IST |
| Venue | Korogi Sports Park, Nisshin |

| Bronze match | Sri Lanka v Bangladesh, 5:30am IST |
Neither side played a completed game in Japan until Thursday. All four men’s quarter-finals were washed out without a toss on 28 and 29 September, so the higher-seeded teams went through, and each finalist has played one match on this ground.
What the semi-finals said about the Nisshin pitch
India were put in by Sri Lanka on a surface that was two-paced and turned sharply, Abhishek Sharma and Samson went for 7 each, and Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel and Tilak Varma made 23 between them. Ishan Kishan, in at No. 5, rescued them with 80 not out off 46 balls, and India reached 169 for 7. Sri Lanka were then bowled out for 45, their lowest T20I total. Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets in the first over, and the spinners, Axar and Abhishek, did most of the rest.
Pakistan’s semi-final was cut to 13 overs because the outfield was still wet. Bangladesh made 111 for 7, Sufyan Moqim took 3 for 26, and Pakistan were 53 for 4 before Abdul Samad (30 not out off 15) and Hasan Nawaz (27 not out off 22) took them home with nine balls to spare.
Read together, the two games say runs are hard to come by on this ground. Kishan made 80 of India’s 169 and nobody else in the side passed 38, and Pakistan were four down for 53 chasing 112. On a pitch like that, 160 could be a good score, and the spinners on both sides are likely to bowl a lot of the overs.
The weather has been the other story of the tournament, and the forecasts published earlier in the week had Saturday as the driest day of it. That matters because the last Asian Games final, India against Afghanistan in Hangzhou in 2023, was washed out and India took gold on seeding.
India vs Pakistan T20I head-to-head
India lead the T20I record 13-3, with one tie, across 17 matches. They have won the last six in a row, and Pakistan’s most recent T20I win over India was the Asia Cup Super Four game in Dubai on 4 September 2022. Our full India vs Pakistan head-to-head record covers every format.
| Date | Venue | Result | India batted |
|---|---|---|---|
| 23 Oct 2022 | Melbourne | India won by 4 wickets | Second |
| 9 Jun 2024 | New York | India won by 6 runs | First |
| 14 Sep 2025 | Dubai | India won by 7 wickets | Second |
| 21 Sep 2025 | Dubai | India won by 6 wickets | Second |
| 28 Sep 2025 | Dubai | India won by 5 wickets | Second |
| 15 Feb 2026 | Colombo | India won by 61 runs | First |
The split worth looking at is by innings.
| India batting | Played | India won | Pakistan won | Tied |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Batting first | 8 | 4 | 3 | 1 |
| Batting second | 9 | 9 | 0 | 0 |
India have won all nine of the T20Is against Pakistan in which they batted second. Every one of Pakistan’s three wins came after India had batted first: Bengaluru in December 2012, Dubai at the 2021 T20 World Cup and Dubai again in September 2022. The 2007 tie in Durban, later settled by a bowl-out, was also an India-batting-first game. It is a small sample, and six of the nine chases came in Dubai and Mirpur rather than on a slow turner in Japan, but it is the most consistent pattern in the fixture.
Thursday’s semi-final complicates it. India batted first in Nisshin and won by 124 runs, which is exactly the opposite of what the head-to-head suggests they should prefer. My read is that the pitch counts for more than the history here, so a captain winning the toss on Saturday will probably look at the surface before the record.
Team news and the two squads
India have brought a strong side. Shreyas Iyer, the new T20I captain, leads a squad that includes Bumrah, Axar, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Tilak Varma as vice-captain, Sanju Samson, Kishan and the 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who made 38 off 21 balls in his first game of the Games. Harshit Rana and Varun Chakaravarthy were ruled out before the tournament and replaced by Yash Thakur and Vipraj Nigam.
Pakistan have not. Their regular T20I captain Salman Ali Agha is missing, and so are Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Shadab Khan. Farhan leads a young squad that had four uncapped players when it was named, and his vice-captain Samad had played five T20Is at the time. Saim Ayub, Usman Khan, Abrar Ahmed and Moqim give them some international experience, and Moqim, the bowler who went for 20 in the last over of the bronze-medal defeat in Hangzhou, has now bowled them into a final.
India vs Pakistan prediction: who could win the final?
India go in as clear favourites. They have the deeper side, the more experienced attack and a run of six straight T20I wins against this opponent. On Thursday their bowlers needed under ten overs to finish the game.
The case for Pakistan rests on the conditions. A slow, turning pitch shrinks the gap between a strong batting side and a weaker one, because nobody scores freely on it, and Pakistan’s spinners, Abrar and Saim among them, will be comfortable bowling into a surface like that. If Pakistan bat first and get to something like 150, they would have a game. If India get the first use of a fresh pitch and post 170 again, it is hard to see this young Pakistan batting order chasing it.
Our view: India are likely to win gold, and the most probable route is the one they took against Sri Lanka, a total set on a wearing pitch and defended with spin. Pakistan’s best chance is a low-scoring game in which the toss and the surface take India’s batting depth out of it.
