India and Pakistan have met 22 times in the Asia Cup, more than in any other tournament. India lead 13-6 with three no results. Every meeting since 1984, and the 1997 washout that splits the count.

The Asia Cup is where India and Pakistan meet most often. They have played each other 22 times in the competition since 1984, which is more than any other tournament has produced — the 50-over World Cup, the T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy have given them 23 meetings between the three of them.
India lead 13-6, with three matches producing no result. India have also won the trophy itself nine times, more than anyone.
The most recent meetings were the three in the 2025 tournament in Dubai, when the two were drawn together in the group, met again in the Super Four and then met a third time in the final. India won all three.

Why some sources say 21 meetings, not 22
Look this record up in three places and you will get three answers. The difference is almost always the 1997 edition in Sri Lanka, where two India-Pakistan fixtures were washed out and one of them never produced a ball.
A match abandoned without a delivery being bowled is a scheduled fixture rather than a played one, and some record-keepers leave it out. Do that and the totals become 21 meetings with two no results. The win columns do not move either way: India 13, Pakistan 6.

The two halves tell different stories. In the 50-over era the fixture was close — eight-five across four decades, and Pakistan won every completed meeting between 1995 and 2004, three of them, with two more washed out. Since the tournament started alternating into a T20 competition in 2016, India have won five of six.
The matches that decided the record
1984, Sharjah — the first one. Surinder Khanna made 56, Sandeep Patil 43 and Sunil Gavaskar an unbeaten 36 as India posted 188 for 4 from their 46 overs. Pakistan were bowled out for 134 and India went on to win the inaugural tournament.
2012, Mirpur — Kohli’s 183. Pakistan made 329, which should have been enough and was not. Virat Kohli’s 183 from 148 balls, with 23 boundaries, took India past it with 13 balls to spare after stands of 133 with Sachin Tendulkar and 172 with Rohit Sharma. It was India’s highest successful ODI chase at the time, and it is still the highest individual score anyone has made in an India-Pakistan match in this competition.
2014, Mirpur — the one-wicket finish. The closest match the fixture has produced here. Pakistan got home with a wicket standing, Shahid Afridi hitting two sixes off Ravichandran Ashwin in the final over to finish it.
2023, Colombo — 356 for 2. The most one-sided of the 22. India made 356 for 2 across a reserve day after rain, and bowled Pakistan out for 128 to win by 228 runs. Both the total and the margin are records for the fixture in one-day cricket.
2025: three meetings in a fortnight
The 2025 tournament in the UAE gave the fixture something it had never had — three India-Pakistan matches inside one competition, all at the Dubai International Stadium.
India won the group game on 14 September by seven wickets, holding Pakistan to 127 for 9. They won the Super Four on 21 September by six wickets, chasing 172 with Abhishek Sharma making 74 from 39 balls and reaching fifty in 24 balls. And they won the final on 28 September by five wickets, Kuldeep Yadav taking 4 for 30 to bowl Pakistan out for 146 and Tilak Varma finishing unbeaten on 69.
It was India’s ninth Asia Cup title and their second in a row. The tournament was also marked by the two sides declining to shake hands after matches, and by the trophy not being presented to India on the night of the final.

Seventeen editions, three winners, and India have taken more than half of them. Pakistan’s two titles are exactly 12 years apart, and in the second of them, 2012, they won the tournament having lost to India on the way.
Two editions are missing an India-Pakistan fixture entirely and the reason is the same in both cases. India did not travel to Sri Lanka in 1986, and Pakistan did not travel to India in 1990-91.
When is the next Asia Cup?
The 2027 Asia Cup is scheduled for Bangladesh in mid-2027, back in the 50-over format ahead of that year’s World Cup. The schedule has not been published, but the two have met at least once in every edition both have entered since 1984, so a fixture is close to a formality.
