Women's Premier League

The Women’s Premier League is a Twenty20 competition for franchise teams in India, run by the WPL Governing Council under the BCCI. It began in 2023 with five teams and has been played in a February and March window.

The league stage is short, and there is very little room in it. Each team plays every other side twice, home and away, which comes to eight matches apiece and 20 in all. Add the playoffs and a full season runs to 22 matches. With a schedule that brief, one defeat carries far more weight than it would across a 14-match league.

Points work as they do across most T20 competitions. A win is worth two, a match ending without a result gives one to each side, and a defeat nothing. Teams level on points are separated by net run rate, which sets the rate a side has scored at against the rate it has conceded at.

Only three teams go through, and that is what makes the top of this table worth watching. Finishing first is worth a great deal more than finishing second, because the leader goes straight into the final while the next two have to play their way there.
