India and West Indies play five T20Is between 6 and 17 October, starting in Lucknow and finishing in Bengaluru. The last time the two sides met in the format was the T20 World Cup Super Eight game at Eden Gardens on 1 March, when Sanju Samson made 97 not out from 50 balls and India chased 196 to reach the semi-finals. Here is the India vs West Indies T20 series in numbers.
India vs West Indies T20 schedule
| Match | Date | Venue |
|---|---|---|
| 1st T20I | Tuesday 6 October | Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow |
| 2nd T20I | Friday 9 October | JSCA International Stadium, Ranchi |
| 3rd T20I | Sunday 11 October | Holkar Stadium, Indore |
| 4th T20I | Wednesday 14 October | Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad |
| 5th T20I | Saturday 17 October | M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru |
All five are night games starting at 7pm IST. They follow the three-match ODI series, which India have already won: they chased 296 with eight wickets in hand in Thiruvananthapuram and then 406 in Guwahati, with the dead third game in Mullanpur on 3 October. Our ODI series preview covers that half of the tour.
India vs West Indies T20 head-to-head
The sides have played 31 T20 internationals. India have won 20, West Indies 10, and one was washed out. That looks lopsided, and it gets more so the closer to home you look.
| Split | Played | India | West Indies |
|---|---|---|---|
| All T20Is | 31 | 20 | 10 |
| Since 2018 | 23 | 18 | 5 |
| In India | 11 | 9 | 2 |
West Indies have won twice in India. The first was the 2016 World T20 semi-final at the Wankhede, won by seven wickets. The second came in Thiruvananthapuram in December 2019, by eight wickets, in a series India still won 2-1.
The number that complicates the picture is the last bilateral series. In August 2023, in the Caribbean and Florida, West Indies won the first two games, lost the next two and then beat India by eight wickets in Lauderhill to take the series 3-2. That was a different West Indies side from this one, and it was away from India. It is still the most recent time the two played five T20Is against each other, and India did not win it.
What the five grounds have done in T20Is
None of the five venues has staged many men’s T20 internationals, so read the table below as a sketch rather than a pitch report. The fuller picture, IPL numbers included, sits on our individual ground pages.
| Ground | T20Is | Side batting first won | Avg first innings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lucknow | 6 | 5 of 6 | 160.0 |
| Ranchi | 4 | 2 of 4 | 160.8 |
| Indore | 4 | 2 of 4 | 200.2 |
| Hyderabad | 3 | 1 of 3 | 230.0 |
| Bengaluru | 10 | 3 of 8 | 155.4 |
The average first innings counts only matches with a winner, so washouts and the Bengaluru tie are left out.
In Lucknow, the side batting first has won five of the six T20Is at the Ekana Stadium. India’s first T20I there, in November 2018, was against West Indies: India made 195/2 and won by 71 runs. The only chase to succeed was India’s 101/4 against New Zealand in January 2023, after New Zealand had been held to 99/8.
Ranchi has had four games and two successful chases, one of them a rain-shortened 2017 match against Australia in which India were set 48 in six overs and made 49/1. Too small a sample to lean on.
The first-innings average at the Holkar Stadium is 200.2, lifted by India’s 260/5 against Sri Lanka in 2017 and South Africa’s 227/3 in 2022. The one low-scoring game was in January 2020, when Sri Lanka made 142/9 and India won with 15 balls to spare.
In Hyderabad, India’s 297/6 against Bangladesh in October 2024 is the highest T20I total at any of the five grounds. The Uppal ground has also seen India chase 208 against West Indies, in December 2019, and 187 against Australia in 2022.
The Chinnaswamy has hosted the most T20Is of the five, and the chasing side has won five of the eight with a result. It also hosted the only tied T20I on this list: India and Afghanistan both made 212 in January 2024, and India won in a second super over.
If the five grounds agree on anything, it is that nobody should assume a low-scoring series. For how par scores work at these venues in the IPL, where the samples are much bigger, see our par score guide by ground.
India’s squad for the West Indies T20Is
Shreyas Iyer captains, with Tilak Varma as vice-captain. The 15 is Iyer, Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav and Mayank Yadav.
Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant are not in it. Kuldeep is back, and Sooryavanshi gets another T20I call-up. With Kishan and Samson both picked as keepers, the batting order is the most interesting selection call India have to make in Lucknow.
West Indies’ squad
Shai Hope leads West Indies in both formats on this tour. The T20I squad is Hope, Jewel Andrew, Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Shimron Hetmyer, Akeal Hosein, Shamar Joseph, Gudakesh Motie, Keemo Paul, Kamil Pooran, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Quentin Sampson, Romario Shepherd and Shamar Springer. Kamil Pooran is uncapped, and Jason Holder has been rested.
How the series looks
On the record alone, India would be expected to win: nine wins from 11 home T20Is against this opponent, 18 from 23 since 2018, and a squad that has just beaten West Indies twice in the ODIs chasing 296 and 406. The ODI side and the T20 side are not the same, though, and West Indies’ T20 group carries hitters in Powell, Rutherford and Shepherd who can turn a game in four overs on grounds like Indore and Bengaluru.
The case for a closer series than the head-to-head suggests rests on 2023, when West Indies won the decider to beat India 3-2. How much that carries over could depend on the grounds: if Lucknow plays true to its record, the side batting first may have the edge in the opener, and the scoring could climb as the series moves to Indore and Hyderabad.
