Como had never played in the Champions League before this season, and their 9-1 win at Lens is the biggest away win in its history

Como are four games into their first Champions League campaign, and they already own a piece of its record book. Cesc Fàbregas’s side won 9-1 at Lens on Wednesday night, the biggest away win in Champions League history. Tasos Douvikas scored a hat-trick, six other players got on the scoresheet, and the last of them was an 18-year-old making his Como debut.

Only one side had scored nine in a Champions League game before: Bayern Munich, in their 9-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb in September 2024. The eight-goal margin matches Liverpool’s 8-0 against Beşiktaş in 2007 and Real Madrid’s 8-0 against Malmö in 2015, and nobody has won by more.

Three up by half-time

It took Como seven minutes to score. Luis Milla lifted a pass into the box, Máximo Perrone headed it back across goal, and Douvikas tapped in. Lens were given a penalty early on for handball against Maxence Caqueret, but VAR found the ball had not hit his arm and the referee changed his mind. Douvikas added a second in the 32nd minute, and Nico Paz finished a quick counter-attack into the roof of the net eight minutes later.

Lucas Da Cunha made it four straight after the restart, set up by Paz. Marc-Oliver Kempf headed in a Milla corner in the 53rd minute, and Douvikas completed his hat-trick soon after, sent clear by Paz and finishing at the near post.

Mattia Liberali came off the bench and scored in the 62nd minute, and Ruben Aguilar’s volley three minutes later gave Lens their goal. Martin Baturina made it eight in the 69th minute after Liberali played him in. In stoppage time Liberali set up Matteo Papaccioli, the 18-year-old debutant, and his goal stood after a VAR check.

The numbers behind it

Como have now scored 19 goals in their first four Champions League games. The previous best in the competition was Juventus’s 14 in 1995-96. They are also the first Italian side to score nine in a major European game since Roma beat Altay 10-1 in 1962, and they became the first team to have 11 different players score or assist in a single Champions League match.

Douvikas has scored in each of those four games, and his six goals make him the competition’s top scorer this season. Only three players had scored in each of an Italian club’s first four Champions League games of a season before him: Alessandro Del Piero, Filippo Inzaghi and Samuel Eto’o. He was the standout, though Paz, who scored one and set up two, had a fair claim too.

Fàbregas started resting players at 6-0, taking Douvikas off just after the hour, and Como still scored three more.

Fourth in the table

The win lifts Como to nine points and fourth in the league phase table, behind Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Arsenal, and their goal difference of +13 is the second best in the competition. Lens are 33rd on three points with a goal difference of -12.

Como were promoted to Serie A in 2024 after 21 years away and finished fourth last season, which is how they got here. Next up is a trip to Inter in Serie A on Sunday, 8 November.
