Lamine Yamal became the Champions League’s top-scoring teenager, and Barcelona ended Aston Villa’s perfect start

Yamal’s seventh-minute goal took him past Kylian Mbappé’s teenage record, Raphinha added two after half-time, and Barcelona beat Aston Villa 3-0 at Camp Nou.

Lamine Yamal became the Champions League’s top-scoring teenager, and Barcelona ended Aston Villa’s perfect start

Lamine Yamal needed seven minutes to become the highest-scoring teenager in Champions League history, and Raphinha scored twice after half-time as Barcelona beat Aston Villa 3-0 at Camp Nou on Tuesday. Villa had won all three of their league-phase games before Tuesday. Camp Nou ended that.

Gerard Martín started at centre-back, and Joan García kept Villa out on a night when they had their chances in the first half. Barcelona had not kept a clean sheet in the Champions League since April 2025, a run Goal put at 18 matches.

A gift for Yamal

The opener came from a mistake. João Gomes tried to play the ball across his own box, it went straight to Yamal, and he curled it past Zion Suzuki. That was his 14th Champions League goal.

Villa should have been level before the break. Johan Manzambi dragged a shot wide after Nicolas Jackson set him up, García got down to save from Manzambi later in the half, and he came off his line to stop Jackson when the striker was through.

Raphinha settles it

The second goal took a big deflection. Raphinha’s shot in the 52nd minute went off a Villa player and past Suzuki. Twelve minutes later João Cancelo got past John McGinn on the left and crossed, and Raphinha tapped it in. He now has 23 Champions League goals for Barcelona, level with Robert Lewandowski.

Hansi Flick’s side had about 65 per cent of the ball and an expected goals figure of 1.96 to Villa’s 0.72. “It was important to defend as a unit,” he said.

The worry for Barcelona is Rodri. He was taken off at half-time with discomfort in his right calf and replaced by Marc Bernal, and he was due to have tests on Wednesday. “We have four days to recover and prepare well for the match,” Flick said.

A bad record for Emery

It was Unai Emery’s 55th birthday, and Camp Nou is still not a happy ground for him. He has lost 15 of his 16 games there as a manager. One of them was the night in March 2017 when his PSG side lost 6-1 after winning the first leg 4-0.

Both clubs are now on nine points from four games, behind Paris Saint-Germain, who have 12 after their 6-0 win at Villarreal. Barcelona go to Atlético Madrid on Sunday 8 November, the last game before the international break, and those tests will decide whether Rodri plays. Villa are at Manchester United the same day.
