JJ Gabriel walked out on Manchester United in September, and Real Madrid now expect to sign him in January

Manchester United spent the autumn trying to talk JJ Gabriel round, and it has not worked. Real Madrid have reached a verbal agreement with the 16-year-old forward and his representatives, BBC Sport and Sky Sports reported on Wednesday, and they expect to sign him in the January window.
The deal is not done. Neither report says Madrid and United have held any club-to-club talks yet, and the Athletic’s David Ornstein wrote that Gabriel is set to join. The direction of travel is clear enough, though. Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain were also interested, and Madrid look to have won.
The debut that never came
Gabriel joined United in 2022 and was named the Premier League’s Under-18 player of the season last term, although he was only 14 when that season started. He played for the first team in pre-season, and United had expected him to become the club’s youngest debutant in their Carabao Cup tie against Brighton in September.
He never got there. He walked out that month, asked United to cancel his registration, and has not been back since. He scored a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut shortly before leaving. He turned 16 on 6 October and has been training on his own in Spain.
Michael Carrick was asked about him after the Brighton defeat and kept it careful. “We’ve got to be really careful of the whole situation,” the United head coach said, adding that the club had to think about “their welfare, their well-being, their exposure” when it came to their young players.
Why the passport matters
An English club’s academy player cannot normally move abroad at 16. Gabriel’s way round that is a European passport, which he qualifies for through his parents. That is expected to make a move outside England easier.
United will be owed compensation if he goes, but the figure is lower if he joins a club outside the Premier League. So United lose a forward they rated as highly as anyone in their academy, without ever seeing him in a competitive first-team game, and get less for him because he is going to Spain rather than to a rival.
That is the part that should sting at Old Trafford. Clubs lose academy players all the time, but rarely one who was a single team sheet away from a club record. United coached him from 2022 and took him on their pre-season tour, and he left before he had played a competitive minute for the first team. If Madrid get this done in January, they will have the player United spent four years building, and United will have a compensation cheque.
