Copa del Rey winners list: every champion since 1903, and Real Sociedad’s 2026 shootout

Barcelona have won the Copa del Rey more times than anyone, with 32 titles. Athletic Bilbao are second on 24 and Real Madrid third on 20. The current holders are Real Sociedad, who beat Atlético Madrid on penalties in the 2026 final in Seville.

Spain’s national cup has been played since 1903, which makes it older than La Liga by 26 years. Below is every winner and runner-up, the clubs with the most titles, the records that have stood for a century, and how the 2026 final was decided.

Most Copa del Rey titles

Twelve clubs have won the cup at least twice. Barcelona have also reached the most finals, 43, and Real Madrid have lost the most, 21, one more than the 20 they have won.

Club Titles Runners-up Last won
Barcelona 32 11 2025
Athletic Bilbao 24 16 2024
Real Madrid 20 21 2023
Atlético Madrid 10 10 2013
Valencia 8 10 2019
Zaragoza 6 5 2004
Sevilla 5 4 2010
Espanyol 4 5 2006
Real Sociedad 3 4 2026
Real Betis 3 2 2022
Real Union 3 1 1927
Deportivo La Coruna 2 0 2002

Four more clubs have one title each: Club Ciclista de San Sebastian (1909), Racing de Irun (1913), Arenas (1919) and Mallorca (2003). Years in this table are the year of the final, so Barcelona’s last win, in the 2024-25 competition, shows as 2025.

Two of these counts are argued over. Many counts give Real Sociedad the 1909 cup as well, won by Club Ciclista with players from the newly formed Real Sociedad, which is why much of the coverage of the 2026 final called it their fourth title. Athletic Bilbao include the 1902 Copa de la Coronacion, won by a combined Bilbao side called Bizcaya, in their own honours list. Neither is counted in the table above, which follows the standard list of finals.

Who won the Copa del Rey in 2026?

Real Sociedad won the 2026 final, beating Atlético Madrid 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw at La Cartuja in Seville on 18 April 2026. Ander Barrenetxea scored after 14 seconds, Ademola Lookman equalised, and Mikel Oyarzabal put Real Sociedad back in front with a penalty in first-half stoppage time. Julián Álvarez made it 2-2 in the 83rd minute and nobody scored in extra time.

Goalkeeper Unai Marrero settled the shootout, saving from Alexander Sorloth and Álvarez, and was named man of the match. Pablo Marín scored the winning kick. It was a rerun of the 1987 final, when Real Sociedad also beat Atlético on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

The 2026-27 competition’s first round is played from 27 to 29 October 2026. Real Sociedad, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atlético enter later, in the round of 32 in December, and the final is scheduled for 24 April 2027, again at La Cartuja.

Copa del Rey records

Most titles in a row

Four, a record shared by three clubs. Madrid FC won four straight from 1905 to 1908, Athletic Bilbao won four from 1930 to 1933, and Barcelona won the four finals from 2015 to 2018.

Biggest win in a final

Five goals, three times: Athletic Bilbao 5-0 Español in 1915, Real Madrid 6-1 Castilla in 1980 and Barcelona 5-0 Sevilla in 2018. The 1980 final is the strangest in the list, because Castilla were Real Madrid’s own reserve team. Reserve sides have since been barred from the competition.

Penalty shootouts

Eight finals have been decided on penalties, the first in 1975 and three of the last five.

Finals that never happened

The 1904 final was not played after a dispute over who should face Athletic Bilbao, and Athletic were awarded the cup. In 1910 and 1913 two rival federations ran separate competitions, so both years have two recognised winners.

Why the cup has had several names

The competition has carried the name of whoever was head of state. It was the Copa del Rey under King Alfonso XIII, the Copa del Presidente de la Republica in the mid-1930s, and the Copa del Generalisimo under Franco until 1976. It has been the Copa del Rey again since 1977. There is no recognised final for 1937 or 1938, during the Spanish Civil War.

Copa del Rey winners list: every final
