Chennaiyin had 25 shots at Salt Lake, and Manvir Singh’s 85th-minute goal won it for Mohun Bagan

For 84 minutes at the Salt Lake Stadium on Monday night, Mohun Bagan Super Giant looked like a side about to drop two points at home to a team that had not won all season. Then Liston Colaço, three minutes off the bench, found Manvir Singh, and Manvir scored the only goal of the game.

The 1-0 win over Chennaiyin FC was Bagan’s first home game of the Indian Super League season, and their second win in a row. It moves them to six points from three games, fifth in the table. Chennaiyin stay 11th with one point.

Chennaiyin had the better of the chances

The score flatters the hosts. Chennaiyin took 25 shots to Bagan’s 17 and had slightly more of the ball. Bagan put seven on target to Chennaiyin’s six, which is about the only column in the stats sheet they won.

Clifford Miranda’s side came closest with ten minutes to go. Madih Talal slipped Nikola Stojanović into the left side of the box, and his low shot for the far corner was smothered by Vishal Kaith, down quickly to his right. Kaith used to play for Chennaiyin. He was the main reason his current club were still level when the goal finally came.

It was goalless at half-time, and Panagiotis Dilmperis made changes early. Sahal Abdul Samad came on at the break for Lallianzuala Chhangte, and Anirudh Thapa, another former Chennaiyin player, replaced Samir Zeljković after 54 minutes. Neither change got Bagan going. The one that did came in the 82nd minute, when Colaço replaced the holding midfielder Deepak Tangri and Bagan went for it.

The same problem, and a different ending

Dilmperis spent the build-up to this game complaining that his team were not taking their chances. They had two goals from their two away games, a 1-0 defeat at NorthEast United and a 2-1 win at SC Delhi. Miguel Figueira, who scored the winner in Delhi and had been carrying a hamstring problem, was not in the squad.

Seventeen shots and one goal is not a cure. Three points papers over a lot, though. Bagan have now won twice by a single goal. That works until it doesn’t, and the next visitors to Salt Lake will not be as forgiving as Chennaiyin were with the ball in the final third.

For Chennaiyin it is a draw and two defeats from three games, all of them away from home. They have scored once. Miranda said before the game that his team would not change their style for Bagan, and on the evidence of Monday he was right not to. They created enough to win this. They still need someone to put the ball in.

Punjab FC next, unbeaten

Both clubs are back on Saturday 31 October. Chennaiyin finally get a home game, against Kerala Blasters in Chennai.

Bagan’s next visitors are Punjab FC, who won 3-2 at Churchill Brothers on Sunday and are unbeaten after three games with seven points. They are level on points with NorthEast United at the top. That is a proper test of whether Bagan’s finishing has been fixed or just patched up for one night.

Keep up with every ISL result
