Ranchi pitch report: what the numbers say
Start with the T20Is, where five matches is still a small sample and one of them was cut short by rain. The October 2026 game moved the numbers more than any before it. In the four full-length games the side batting first has averaged 193.5 (196, 153, 176 and 249); until India’s 249/5 that figure was 175.0. Count the rain-hit 2017 match, when Australia made 118/8 in 18.4 overs, and it is 178.4. The chasing side has won three of the five. All five captains who won the toss chose to bowl, and three of them went on to win.
ODI totals at Ranchi have climbed. Across the six ODIs with a result, the first innings averaged 273.5. In the three played since 2019 it is 313.3. India have batted second in six of their seven ODIs here and won three of those chases, and the side batting first has won three of the six. The toss has counted for very little: the toss-winner has won only two of the six decided games.
In Tests, all three captains who won the toss chose to bat, and the first innings has averaged 433.7. The pitch then turns. Spinners have taken 56 of the 86 wickets that fell to bowlers in Ranchi Tests, and Ravindra Jadeja alone has 17 of them at 20.94. South Africa were bowled out for 162 and 133 in 2019, and England for 145 in their second innings in 2024.
