Chinmay Sutar fell one short of a hundred on debut, and his first one was 400 not out for Mizoram

Chinmay Sutar fell one short of a hundred on debut, and his first one was 400 not out for Mizoram

Chinmay Sutar walked out early on Sunday and was still there when Mizoram declared on Monday. In between he made 400 not out off 517 balls against Nagaland, with 46 fours and seven sixes, in only his second first-class match.

One batter had reached 400 in the Ranji Trophy before him. Bhausaheb Nimbalkar made 443 not out for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in 1948-49, and that is still the competition’s highest score. Sutar went past Prithvi Shaw’s 379 for Mumbai against Assam in 2023 to take second place on the list.

From 146 for 4 to 581 for 9

This was a Plate group game at the Nagaland Cricket Stadium in Sovima, and for a while it looked like an ordinary one. Mizoram slipped to 146 for 4 before Sutar and Jehu Anderson put on 168 for the fifth wicket. Anderson made 69. Nobody else in the Mizoram side passed fifty.

Sutar was 180 not out at the close on day one. Wickets kept falling at the other end on Monday, but he kept going, and by tea he had 392.

The last man, Chhakchhuak, was there to keep one end shut, and he did. The tenth-wicket stand was unbroken on roughly 190 when Sutar reached 400 in the 155th over and Mizoram declared at 581 for 9. Sutar had made more than two-thirds of the runs.

From Mumbai’s local leagues to Mizoram

Sutar is 29 and made his name in Mumbai’s local leagues. He played for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy earlier this year, and in June he helped MSC Maratha Royals keep their Mumbai T20 League title. Ahead of this season he took a no-objection certificate from the Mumbai Cricket Association and signed for Mizoram.

His first-class debut came against Manipur in the opening round. He made 35 and then 99 in the second innings, and Mizoram still lost by three wickets. A week after falling one short of a maiden hundred, he turned his first one into a quadruple.

Wisden says no batter’s first first-class hundred had ever been a 400. The previous highest maiden century was Sakibul Gani’s 341 for Bihar on debut in 2022, and that one was made against Mizoram.

Where it ranks

Sutar is the tenth batter to make 400 or more in a first-class innings. The list starts with Brian Lara’s 501 not out and includes Hanif Mohammad, Don Bradman and Graeme Hick. Nimbalkar is the only other Indian on it.

The Plate group is the Ranji Trophy’s second tier, and Nagaland are a long way from Mumbai or Karnataka. Still, 517 balls is a long time to bat against anyone. Not many batters in Indian domestic cricket stay in that long any more.
