India play two matches at Eden Park on their 2026 tour of New Zealand: the fourth T20I on Friday 30 October (8pm local, 12:30pm IST) and the first ODI on Wednesday 4 November (3pm local, 7:30am IST). The record they bring to Auckland has one striking pattern. India have won seven white-ball internationals at Eden Park, and every one of them came batting second.
This Eden Park pitch report covers every men’s international at the ground since 1930, with the Test, ODI and T20I records, India’s results and what the numbers say about the surface.

Eden Park is a rugby stadium first and a cricket ground second, and the oval shows it. The straight boundaries are famously short, which is why sixes come so easily down the ground and why bowlers aim square. Those match counts include two ODIs abandoned without a ball bowled and a T20I against Australia in March 2020 that was cancelled.
Eden Park pitch report: what the numbers say
In T20Is the side batting first has averaged 176.4 across the 25 full-length games with a result, and 178.1 in the 17 since 2015. Six of those 17 went past 200. The results are close to an even split, 15 wins batting first and 13 chasing, and 7-7 since 2019. The toss is where it gets odd. Captains who win it have chosen to bowl 23 times out of 33, and the toss-winner has won only 10 of the 28 decided games.
New Zealand’s own T20I record here is poor. They have won 12 and lost 16 of their 34, with four ties and two games washed out or cancelled. India have played three T20Is here and won all three, chasing each time.
ODI scoring has climbed. The first innings averaged 222.6 across all 67 full-length decided games, 257.7 in the 11 since 2015 and 285.8 in the four since 2019. Chasing teams lead the all-time count 43 to 32, but the last four decided ODIs have gone 3-1 to the side batting first.
Tests have been rarer than the ground’s profile suggests. There have been 50, but none since March 2018, and 24 of the 50 were drawn. The side batting first and the side chasing have won 13 each.

The ground’s most famous T20I was in February 2018. New Zealand made 243/6, with 105 from Martin Guptill, and lost, because Australia chased it down at 245/5 in 18.5 overs. That was the highest successful chase in men’s T20Is at the time. That is India’s ODI record at Eden Park: won four, lost six, one tie. All four wins were chases. The three times India batted first they lost, most recently in November 2022, when 306/7 was overhauled by Tom Latham’s unbeaten 145 with 17 balls to spare. If India win the toss on 4 November, the history says field.

| Lowest total | 26, New Zealand v England, 1955 |
| Highest score | 336*, Wally Hammond v New Zealand, 1933 |

The last Test here, a day-night match against England in March 2018, began with England bowled out for 58, Trent Boult taking 6/32.
India have played five Tests at Eden Park, winning two, drawing two and losing one. Prasanna’s 8/76 set up an eight-wicket win in 1976. The defeat came in February 2014, by 40 runs, after Brendon McCullum made 224 in New Zealand’s first innings of 503.
