Highest score in ODI cricket: every 400-plus total, and the four records people mean

England’s 498 for 4 is the highest team total in ODI cricket, but the question has three other right answers. Here is every 400-plus innings ever made, and what happened to the teams that got there.

Highest score in ODI cricket: every 400-plus total, and the four records people mean

The highest score in ODI cricket is 498 for 4, made by England against the Netherlands at Amstelveen on 17 June 2022. Phil Salt, Dawid Malan and Jos Buttler all made centuries in the same innings, and Liam Livingstone came in at the end and hit 66 from 22 balls.

That is the answer to the question as most people mean it. It is not the only answer, because “highest score in an ODI” is really three questions wearing the same coat, and the pages that answer only one of them leave out records that are bigger. The highest individual score is 264. The highest total anyone has successfully chased is 438. And for four years the highest score made in any one-day international was not a men’s total at all.

This page gives all of them, then the full list of every 400-plus innings in men’s ODI cricket, with two arithmetic checks you can run on it yourself.

The four records people mean by “highest ODI score”

The question Record Who When
Highest team total 498/4 England v Netherlands, Amstelveen 17 June 2022
Highest individual score 264 Rohit Sharma v Sri Lanka, Kolkata 13 November 2014
Highest successful run chase 438/9 South Africa v Australia, Johannesburg 12 March 2006
Highest total in a women’s ODI 490/4 New Zealand v Ireland, Dublin 8 June 2018

The last row is the one that gets left out, and it is the most interesting. When Suzie Bates made 151 from 94 balls and Maddy Green 121 from 77 in Dublin in June 2018, New Zealand’s 490 for 4 went past England’s 444 for 3 and became the highest total made in any one-day international, by either a men’s or a women’s side. It held that status until England reached 498 in Amstelveen four years later. A page that says the record has always belonged to a men’s team is skipping those four years.

Rohit Sharma’s 264 came at Eden Gardens off 173 balls with 33 fours and nine sixes, and it is covered separately in our list of the highest individual scores in ODI cricket.

Thirty innings have reached 400 in men’s one-day internationals. The list below is complete to 31 July 2026, and the outcome column shows what happened to the side that made the runs, not who batted first.

Which teams get to 400, and the check that proves the list is complete

Only seven countries have ever made 400 in a men’s ODI. Three of them account for 22 of the 30 innings between them.

Team 400-plus innings Won Lost
South Africa 8 8 0
England 7 7 0
India 7 7 0
Australia 3 2 1
Sri Lanka 2 1 1
New Zealand 2 1 1
Zimbabwe 1 1 0
Total 30 27 3

Two checks run in about ten seconds, and both have to hold on any version of this list. The first is that the team column has to sum to the number of rows in the main table: 8 plus 7 plus 7 plus 3 plus 2 plus 2 plus 1 is 30, and there are 30 innings above. The second is that wins and losses have to sum to the same number, because every one of these matches produced a result: 27 and 3 is 30 again.

Those checks are worth running because this is a list that goes wrong easily. The version of this page we published in 2023 had 22 rows and a per-team table whose wins column did not reconcile with its totals column, which is the tell that a row has been dropped somewhere. It also credited South Africa with 438 for 5 against India at the Wankhede. Faf du Plessis retired hurt in that innings rather than being dismissed, so the correct figure is 438 for 4, and any source counting retirements as wickets will get that row wrong.

Teams that made 400 and still lost

Twenty-seven of the 30 sides who reached 400 won the match. The three that did not are each a different kind of failure, and no two of them are really comparable.

Australia’s 434 for 4 at the Wanderers in March 2006 is the famous one. Ricky Ponting made 164 from 105 balls, Australia became the first side in history to pass 400 in an ODI, and South Africa then chased it down with 438 for 9, Herschelle Gibbs making 175 from 111. That match remains the only time a 400-plus target has been overhauled, and the 872 runs scored in it is still the highest aggregate in any one-day international.

Sri Lanka’s 411 for 8 at Rajkot in December 2009 was not a first innings at all. India had already made 414 for 7, and Sri Lanka fell three runs short chasing it. It is the only other match in which both sides passed 400.

New Zealand’s 401 for 6 against Pakistan in Bengaluru at the 2023 World Cup is the one most often described wrongly. Rachin Ravindra made 108 and Kane Williamson 95, and Pakistan won by 21 runs on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method after rain, having reached 200 for 1 in 25.3 overs against a revised target of 342 in 41 overs. Pakistan did not chase 402. Several accounts of that match also call New Zealand the first side to lose after scoring 400, which the Australia game in 2006 disproves by seventeen years.

An empty floodlit cricket stadium at dusk, the kind of venue where 400-plus ODI totals are made

The 400 club arrives in clumps, not a steady climb

The obvious story about big ODI totals is that scoring has risen year on year. The list does not support it. Twenty of these thirty innings came in just five calendar years, and there are long stretches with none at all.

Year 400-plus innings
2006 4
2007 1
2008 1
2009 2
2010 1
2011 1
2014 1
2015 6
2016 1
2018 1
2019 1
2022 2
2023 5
2025 3

The two peaks are World Cup years. Six of the 30 came in 2015 and five in 2023, and the tournament itself supplied a good share of them: South Africa’s 428 for 5 against Sri Lanka in Delhi in October 2023 is the highest total made in a World Cup match, past Australia’s 417 for 6 against Afghanistan in Perth in 2015, which had held it for eight years. Our list of the highest totals in ODI World Cup history covers that group on its own.

The gaps are the other half of the story. There is no 400 anywhere in 2012, 2013, 2017, 2020 or 2021, none in 2024, and none in the first seven months of 2026 either. Then 2025 produced three, two of them by England and one by Australia. A format people describe as inflating without pause has actually spent whole years without a single team reaching the mark.

The most recent of those, England’s 414 for 5 at Southampton on 7 September 2025, produced the most lopsided result any of these innings has: South Africa were bowled out for 72 and England won by 342 runs, which is the largest margin of victory by runs in ODI history. That record has passed through this list more than once. India’s 257-run win over Bermuda in 2007 held it before New Zealand beat Ireland by 290 in Aberdeen the following year.

India’s highest ODI score

India’s highest total is 418 for 5 against the West Indies at Indore on 8 December 2011, built on Virender Sehwag’s 219 from 149 balls, which was the world record individual score until Rohit Sharma made 209 against Australia two years later. India have seven 400-plus innings, level with England and behind only South Africa, and have won all seven. Their first came at the 2007 World Cup, 413 for 5 against Bermuda in Port of Spain, again with Sehwag at the front of it on 114 from 87 balls. The three highest ODI totals by India are covered in more detail separately.

Common questions

What is the highest score in ODI cricket? England’s 498 for 4 against the Netherlands at Amstelveen on 17 June 2022, which remains the record.

Has any team scored 500 in an ODI? No. England’s 498 is the closest anyone has come, and England are the only side ever to pass 450, which they have done twice.

What is the highest individual score in an ODI? Rohit Sharma’s 264 for India against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens on 13 November 2014. Martin Guptill’s 237 not out and Virender Sehwag’s 219 are next. Rohit is the only batter with three ODI double centuries, having also made 209 and 208 not out.

What is the highest successful run chase in ODI cricket? South Africa’s 438 for 9 against Australia at Johannesburg on 12 March 2006, still the only time a side has chased down 400 or more.

Which team has made 400 most often? South Africa, with eight, ahead of England and India on seven each.

How many teams have scored 400 in an ODI? Seven: South Africa, England, India, Australia, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe’s 408 for 6 against the United States at Harare in June 2023 came in a World Cup Qualifier.

Scoring at this end of the record book depends on batters going past three figures and staying in, which is why the same names keep appearing here and in our lists of the most centuries in international cricket and the fastest hundreds in ODI cricket.
