India | 413/5 vs Bermuda | 2007

India have the third-highest total in ODI World Cup history. Led by captain Rahul Dravid, they posted 413/5 against Bermuda in Port of Spain in 2007. Virender Sehwag (114), Sourav Ganguly (89), Yuvraj Singh (83) and Sachin Tendulkar (57 not out) guided the side to the total. Bermuda were then skittled for 156 as India won by 257 runs.

South Africa | 411/4 vs Ireland | 2015

South Africa are fourth as well. Against Ireland in Canberra at the 2015 World Cup, Hashim Amla’s 159, Faf du Plessis’ 109 and Rilee Rossouw’s unbeaten 30-ball 61 powered them to 411/4. South Africa then bowled Ireland out for 210 in 45 overs to win by 201 runs.

India | 410/4 vs Netherlands | 2023

India’s 410/4 against the Netherlands at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on 12 November 2023 is the fifth-highest, and their own second-highest World Cup total. Shreyas Iyer made an unbeaten 128 and KL Rahul 102 as India closed the group stage with a ninth win from nine. The Netherlands were bowled out for 250 and India won by 160 runs.

Pakistan needed to chase it down quickly to stay alive on net run rate, and were 200/1 in 25.3 overs when the rain came, Fakhar Zaman unbeaten on 126 from 81 balls and Babar Azam on 66. The match was called off there and Pakistan won by 21 runs on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method.

Why 2023 rewrote this list

Four of the seven 400-plus totals in World Cup history were made at the 2023 tournament in India, and seven of the 15 scores in the table above come from that single edition. It was a ten-team round robin in which every side played every other before the semi-finals, so the strongest batting line-ups met the weakest attacks more often than in a group format.
