India’s highest total in one-day international cricket is 418/5, made against West Indies at Indore on 8 December 2011. It has stood for nearly fifteen years. Below it, though, the list has moved a great deal: India have passed 400 on eight occasions, and half of those came in the three years to 2026.

418/5 v West Indies, Indore, December 2011
India’s highest ODI total came in the fourth game of a five-match series against West Indies. It was the match in which Virender Sehwag made 219 off 149 balls with 25 fours and seven sixes — the second double-century by an India batter, and a score that passed Sachin Tendulkar’s 200 not out as the highest individual innings in ODI cricket at the time. Gautam Gambhir made 67 and Suresh Raina 55. West Indies replied with 265 and lost by 153 runs, Ravindra Jadeja and Rahul Sharma taking three wickets each.
414/7 v Sri Lanka, Rajkot, December 2009
India’s record until Indore two years later, and one of the highest-scoring ODIs ever played. Sri Lanka won the toss and fielded on a flat Rajkot pitch. Sehwag made 146, MS Dhoni 72 and Sachin Tendulkar 69, with late cameos from Ravindra Jadeja (30 not out) and Virat Kohli (27).
Sri Lanka very nearly chased it. Tilakaratne Dilshan made 160, and with Kumar Sangakkara and Upul Tharanga the three of them put on 316 runs between them. India held on to win by three runs.
413/5 v Bermuda, Port of Spain, March 2007
The 2007 World Cup ended badly for India, who went out in the group stage after losing to Bangladesh. This was the exception: a net-run-rate exercise against Bermuda that turned into one of India’s best batting displays. Sehwag made 114, Sourav Ganguly 89, Yuvraj Singh 83 off 46 balls and Tendulkar 57 not out. Bermuda were bowled out for 156 and lost by 257 runs.
410/4 v Netherlands, Bengaluru, November 2023
India’s highest total since 2011 came in their last group game of the 2023 World Cup, at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Shreyas Iyer made 128 not out off 94 balls and KL Rahul 102 off 64, with Rohit Sharma (61), Shubman Gill (51) and Virat Kohli (51) all passing fifty before them — five India batters over fifty in one innings. The Netherlands were bowled out for 250 and lost by 160 runs.
409/8 v Bangladesh, Chattogram, December 2022
After losing the first two matches of the series, India answered with 409/8 in the dead rubber. Ishan Kishan made 210 — his maiden double-century in ODIs — and Virat Kohli made his 72nd international hundred alongside him.
402 v Afghanistan, Lucknow, June 2026
The most recent addition to the list, and the only total on it where India were bowled out. Shubman Gill made 154 off 110 balls with 22 fours, Ishan Kishan 125 off 79 with seven sixes, and Rohit Sharma 48. India were dismissed for 402 with a ball of the innings remaining. Afghanistan were bowled out for 232 and lost by 170 runs.
399/5 v Australia, Indore, September 2023
Shreyas Iyer (105 off 90) and Shubman Gill (104 off 97) both made hundreds, KL Rahul 52, and Suryakumar Yadav finished with 72 not out off 37 balls. Australia were bowled out for 217 inside 29 overs and lost by 182 runs.
397/4 v New Zealand, Wankhede, November 2023
Made in the 2023 World Cup semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium. Virat Kohli scored 117 and Shreyas Iyer 105 off 70 balls, with Shubman Gill 80 not out. Kohli now holds the record for ODI hundreds with 54, ahead of Tendulkar’s 49. New Zealand were not far off: Daryl Mitchell made 134 and they were bowled out for 327, losing by 70 runs.
390/5 v Sri Lanka, Thiruvananthapuram, January 2023
Virat Kohli made 166 not out off 110 balls and Shubman Gill 116, and Sri Lanka were then bowled out for 73 in 22 overs. The margin was 317 runs.

India made 404/5 against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens in November 2014 and 401/3 against South Africa at Gwalior in February 2010 — the match in which Sachin Tendulkar became the first man to score a double-century in a one-day international.
