Sachin Tendulkar was the first man to score 200 in a one-day international. He did it against South Africa at Gwalior on 24 February 2010, in the second ODI of the series, finishing unbeaten on 200 from 147 balls with 25 fours and three sixes. India made 401 for 3, bowled South Africa out for 248 and won by 153 runs.
The first ODI had been played more than 39 years earlier, in January 1971. Since then the mark has been reached 12 more times, by nine more batters. Here is every men’s ODI double century, with the highest of them first.

Rohit Sharma: three double centuries
If one batter has mastered the 50-over double, it is Rohit Sharma. His first was 209 against Australia at Bengaluru in November 2013. A year later, at Eden Gardens on 13 November 2014, he made 264 against Sri Lanka, with 33 fours and nine sixes, and it is still the highest individual score in ODI history. He added 208 not out against Sri Lanka at Mohali in December 2017. Nobody else has more than two.
India’s five double centurions
Five Indians have now scored ODI double centuries: Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag (219 against West Indies in 2011), Rohit, Ishan Kishan (210 off 131 balls against Bangladesh in December 2022) and Shubman Gill. Gill is the only batter apart from Rohit with two. His 208 against New Zealand at Hyderabad in January 2023 was followed by 223 not out against West Indies at Guwahati on 30 September 2026, the third-highest score in ODI history, made while India chased 406 at Barsapara.
The other double centurions
Martin Guptill’s 237 not out against West Indies at the 2015 World Cup is the highest score by a non-Indian batter, and Chris Gayle made 215 against Zimbabwe in the same tournament, the first double century at a World Cup. Fakhar Zaman made Pakistan’s first, 210 not out against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo in 2018. Glenn Maxwell’s 201 not out against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup was the first double century made batting second, and it won the match; Gill’s 223 not out is the only other. The newest name on the list is Pathum Nissanka, who made Sri Lanka’s first, 210 not out against Afghanistan at Pallekele on 9 February 2024.
Tendulkar’s ODI career
Tendulkar finished with 18,426 runs in 463 ODIs, with 49 hundreds and 96 fifties. Both the runs and the appearances are still records; his 49 hundreds were the record until Virat Kohli, who now has 55, passed them. Tendulkar also won 62 player-of-the-match awards in ODIs, the most by anyone.
