Barsapara Stadium records: pitch report, highest totals and every big number in Guwahati

Barsapara Stadium has spent most of its international life as a batting ground, and then it staged the heaviest Test defeat India have ever suffered. Every single innings in the venue’s two men’s ODIs has passed 300. India have piled up 237 for 3 in a T20I here and been rolled for 118. South Africa won the ground’s first Test by 408 runs. The numbers pull in two directions, and which set matters depends entirely on the format you are looking at.

Barsapara Stadium at a glance

The ground goes by three names. It is officially the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Cricket Stadium, named after the Assamese singer and filmmaker. Most scorecards list it as the Assam Cricket Association Stadium. Everyone in cricket calls it Barsapara, after the Guwahati locality it sits in.

That capacity makes it the ninth largest cricket stadium in India and comfortably the biggest sports venue in the northeast. It became India’s 49th international cricket ground when it was inaugurated on 10 October 2017 by Sarbananda Sonowal, then the chief minister of Assam.

Cricket had been played there for five years by that point. The first fixture of any kind was an East Zone Senior Women’s Inter-State One-Day match between Assam and Odisha on 4 November 2012, and the first first-class game came in the 2013-14 Ranji Trophy season when Assam hosted Kerala.

Barsapara Stadium pitch report: what the surface actually does

In white-ball cricket the answer is simple. This is a batting ground with a fast outfield, and the scoreboard reflects it almost every time.

Consider the ODI record. Two men’s one-day internationals have been played at Barsapara, which means four completed innings, and the lowest of them is 306. Sri Lanka’s 306 for 8 in January 2023 is the smallest total the ground has produced in the format, and they lost that game by 67 runs. There is no ODI par score here in any meaningful sense, because nothing below 300 has ever been posted.

Chasing has worked too. India ran down 323 against West Indies in October 2018 with 47 balls to spare. Australia chased 223 in a T20I in November 2023 and got there off the final delivery. India knocked off 154 against New Zealand in January 2026 inside 10 overs. Captains have generally preferred to bowl first and take the surface later in the evening, and the results have mostly justified it.

The Test is the outlier, and it is worth treating carefully because there has only been one of them. Over five days in November 2025 the ball did enough for both spin and seam to take control, India were dismissed for 201 and 140, and the match finished inside the distance by a colossal margin. One Test is not a trend. It is a warning that the red ball behaves nothing like the white one here.

The only Test at Barsapara: South Africa’s 408-run win

Barsapara waited eight years for Test cricket and got a demolition. The second Test of South Africa’s 2025-26 tour ran from 22 to 26 November 2025 and was the first Test ever played in India’s northeast.

South Africa batted first and made 489. Senuran Muthusamy reached his maiden Test hundred, 109 from 206 balls, and put on 97 in 17.4 overs with Marco Jansen, who made 93. That stand was the highest of the series. Kuldeep Yadav took 4 for 115 in a long, unrewarding shift.

India folded for 201 in reply, with Jansen taking 6 for 48. South Africa declared their second innings at 260 for 5, setting 549, and Simon Harmer’s 6 for 37 finished India off for 140. The 408-run margin is the biggest defeat by runs in India’s Test history, and it completed a 2-0 sweep that gave South Africa their first series win in India in 25 years.

Muthusamy’s 109 remains the only Test century scored at the ground.

Barsapara Stadium ODI records

Only two men’s ODIs have been staged here, but both were run-soaked.

Highest total: India’s 373 for 7 against Sri Lanka on 10 January 2023. Virat Kohli made 113 off 87 balls for his 45th ODI century, Rohit Sharma hit 83 and Shubman Gill added 70. Sri Lanka replied with 306 for 8, Dasun Shanaka carrying his bat for an unbeaten 108 off 88 and adding 100 for the ninth wicket with Kasun Rajitha. India won by 67 runs and Kohli took the match award.

Highest successful chase: India’s 326 for 2 on 21 October 2018, the ground’s first ODI. West Indies had made 322 for 8, built on Shimron Hetmyer’s 106 from 78 balls and Kieron Powell’s 51. It was not nearly enough. Rohit finished unbeaten on 152 from 117 with eight sixes, Kohli made 140 off 107, and India got home by eight wickets with 47 balls unused.

Lowest total: Sri Lanka’s 306 for 8, which tells you everything about the surface. Four innings, four scores of 300 or more.

Barsapara Stadium T20I records

Four men’s T20Is have been played at Barsapara and they cover the full range, from the ground’s one genuine bowling day to a chase that finished off the last ball.

Highest total: India’s 237 for 3 against South Africa on 2 October 2022. Suryakumar Yadav smashed 61 off 22 balls, KL Rahul made 57 and Kohli finished 49 not out. South Africa’s reply was extraordinary in its own right. David Miller hit an unbeaten 106 from 47 and Quinton de Kock 69 not out in an unbroken stand of 174, and they still lost by 16 runs.

Lowest total: India’s 118 all out on 10 October 2017, in the ground’s first international match. Jason Behrendorff removed Rohit, Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan and Manish Pandey to leave India 31 for 4, finishing with 4 for 21. Australia chased it down in 15.3 overs through Moises Henriques and Travis Head. A crowd of 38,132 turned up for the venue’s debut, and nine years later Behrendorff’s 4 for 21 is still the best bowling analysis anyone has produced here in a T20I.

Highest individual score: Ruturaj Gaikwad’s 123 not out from 57 balls against Australia on 28 November 2023, and he still ended up on the losing side. India made 222 for 3. Glenn Maxwell answered with 104 not out off 48 and finished the game by taking 6, 4, 4, 4 off the last four balls from Prasidh Krishna to win by five wickets with nothing to spare.

The most recent international here was the third T20I against New Zealand on 25 January 2026. Jasprit Bumrah and Ravi Bishnoi shared five wickets for 35 between them to hold New Zealand to 153 for 9, then Abhishek Sharma reached fifty in 14 balls, the second fastest by an Indian in T20Is, and made 68 off 20. Suryakumar Yadav’s 57 off 26 finished it. India won by eight wickets with 60 balls remaining, finishing the chase in half the allotted overs.

IPL at Barsapara: Rajasthan Royals’ second home

The BCCI pushed the IPL into the northeast in April 2023, and Rajasthan Royals have used Barsapara as their secondary home venue ever since, typically for a couple of fixtures a season.

The 2026 season produced the ground’s best IPL cricket so far, largely because of a teenager. Vaibhav Suryavanshi had turned 15 three days before Rajasthan’s home game against Chennai Super Kings on 30 March, and then reached a half-century in 15 balls, finishing with 52 off 17 as the Royals chased 128 with 47 deliveries in hand. Jofra Archer, Nandre Burger and Ravindra Jadeja had each taken two wickets to bowl CSK out for 127.

Rain cut the Mumbai Indians game on 7 April to 11 overs a side. Suryavanshi hit the first ball he faced from Bumrah over long-on for six, did it again three deliveries later and made 39 off 14, Yashasvi Jaiswal finished unbeaten on 77 from 32, and Rajasthan’s 150 for 3 proved 27 runs too many.

The best of them came on 10 April. Rajat Patidar’s 63 off 40 lifted Royal Challengers Bengaluru to 201 for 8, and Rajasthan simply overwhelmed it. Suryavanshi again reached fifty in 15 balls on his way to 78 off 26, and his stand of 108 with Dhruv Jurel came from 37 deliveries at a rate of 17.51, the second highest run rate for a century partnership in IPL history. Rajasthan’s powerplay score of 97 for 1 was the highest of IPL 2026.

Women’s internationals at Barsapara

Barsapara hosted women’s international cricket for the first time in March 2019, when England won all three T20Is against India between 4 and 9 March.

Its bigger moment came in 2025. The ground staged the opening match of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup on 30 September, India against Sri Lanka, its first women’s ODI. A month later, on 29 October, Laura Wolvaardt made 169 from 143 balls for South Africa against England. That innings is the highest individual score by anyone, in any format, at Barsapara Stadium.

Is Barsapara Stadium a batting or bowling pitch?

For limited-overs cricket it is a batting pitch, and an unusually generous one. No ODI innings here has finished below 300, T20I totals of 220 and above are routine, and sides batting second have chased successfully more often than not. The single Test played at the ground went the other way entirely, with 20 wickets falling to spin and seam and neither side’s second innings passing 260, so the red-ball evidence points in the opposite direction.

What is the highest score at Barsapara Stadium?

South Africa’s 489 in the November 2025 Test is the highest team total in any format. In limited-overs cricket it is India’s 373 for 7 against Sri Lanka in January 2023, and the highest T20I total is India’s 237 for 3 against South Africa in October 2022.
