Conway is out of the series, and India go to Wellington 1-0 up at the ground of their 2019 win

Until this week, India’s last ODI win in New Zealand came by 35 runs in Wellington in February 2019. They go back to the same ground on Saturday 1-0 up in the five-match series, and New Zealand will be without Devon Conway.

The second ODI starts at 3pm local time, 7:30am IST, at HNRY Stadium, formerly Sky Stadium.

Conway out, Henry cleared

Conway collided with Matt Henry in a fielding drill at Eden Park on 3 November and was diagnosed with concussion. He misses the remaining four ODIs, and the aim is to have him fit for the first Test, which starts in Wellington on 19 November. Nick Kelly, a left-handed batter already named in the squad for the last two games, joins the group in Wellington on Friday.

Henry was checked after the same collision. He has been cleared and is in contention to play. New Zealand were already without Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman, both ruled out before the series began. Mitchell Santner captains.

What India have to build on

Rain made the Eden Park game awkward, and India handled it. Arshdeep Singh took 4 for 70, Gurnoor Brar 3 for 44 and Anshul Kamboj 2 for 22 from his ten overs, and New Zealand were all out for 185 in 40.2 overs. Rain stoppages cut India’s target to 143 in 32 overs. Virat Kohli made 74 off 51 balls, and India got there with 56 balls to spare despite a late wobble.

Shubman Gill leads the side in the first three games. After the Hamilton ODI on 10 November he leaves to prepare for the Tests, and Shreyas Iyer takes charge for the two games at Mount Maunganui.

India at this ground

India have played four ODIs at the ground. They won by two wickets in 2003 and by 35 runs in 2019, lost by 87 runs in 2014, and the 2009 game ended with no result.

The weather could have a say again. Showers are forecast for Wellington on Saturday afternoon, which is when the first innings will be under way.
