The highest individual score in ODI cricket is Rohit Sharma’s 264, made off 173 balls against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens on 13 November 2014. Twelve years on, no one else has reached 240.
Martin Guptill’s unbeaten 237 is second and Virender Sehwag’s 219 third. Rohit is the only player to have made three ODI double-centuries; nine other players have made one each.

India had already won the series 3-0 when they played the fourth ODI, and the match is remembered for one innings. Rohit made 264 off 173 balls in a total of 404 for 5 — more, on his own, than Sri Lanka’s entire reply of 251. India won by 153 runs.
The innings holds a second record that is easy to miss. Rohit hit 33 fours, which is the most anyone has hit in a one-day international; Sachin Tendulkar’s 200 not out and Sehwag’s 219 are next on 25 each. So the two biggest boundary-hitting innings in the format’s history belong to the same man’s 264.

Tendulkar’s 200 not out at Gwalior in February 2010 was the first, thirty-nine years into the format’s history. Five more came in the next five years, and six in the eleven years since.

Maxwell’s is the only one of the twelve made in a second innings — every other double-century was scored batting first. Afghanistan had made 291 for 5 at the 2023 World Cup, Australia were seven down chasing 292, and Maxwell finished 201 not out off 128 balls to take them to 293 for 7 with 19 balls left. He and his last partner were still there at the end, so the whole of the winning eighth-wicket stand was unbroken, and he made it while cramping badly enough that he could barely run between the wickets.

Guptill’s 237 not out off 163 balls came in a World Cup quarter-final against West Indies at Wellington in March 2015, with 24 fours and 11 sixes. It is the highest score made in a World Cup match.
Sehwag’s 219 at Indore in December 2011 came while he was captaining India against West Indies, in a total of 418 for 5. He was the second man to a double-century and, until Rohit’s 264, held the record.
The highest ODI score for other teams
Outside the double-centurions, Charles Coventry’s 194 not out for Zimbabwe against Bangladesh in 2009 and Saeed Anwar’s 194 for Pakistan against India at Chennai in 1997 are the highest. Anwar’s stood as the world record for twelve years until Coventry equalled it, and neither was beaten until Tendulkar’s 200.
Among the Associate nations, Scotland’s George Munsey made 191 against the Netherlands at Dundee in June 2025, the highest ODI score by anyone outside the Full Members.
