The highest individual score in ODI cricket is Rohit Sharma’s 264, made off 173 balls against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens on 13 November 2014. Twelve years on, no one else has reached 240.
Martin Guptill’s unbeaten 237 is second, and Shubman Gill’s 223 not out against West Indies at Guwahati on 30 September 2026 is now third, ahead of Virender Sehwag’s 219. Rohit is the only player to have made three ODI double-centuries and Gill the only one with two; eight other players have made one each.

Rohit Sharma | 264 v Sri Lanka, Eden Gardens, 2014
India had already won the series 3-0 when they played the fourth ODI, and the match is remembered for one innings. Rohit made 264 off 173 balls in a total of 404 for 5 — more, on his own, than Sri Lanka’s entire reply of 251. India won by 153 runs.
The innings holds a second record that is easy to miss. Rohit hit 33 fours, which is the most anyone has hit in a one-day international; Shubman Gill’s 26 in his 223 not out in 2026 are next, then Sachin Tendulkar’s 200 not out and Sehwag’s 219 on 25 each.

Tendulkar’s 200 not out at Gwalior in February 2010 was the first, thirty-nine years into the format’s history. Five more came in the next five years, and seven in the eleven years since.
Glenn Maxwell | 201* v Afghanistan, Wankhede, 2023
Maxwell’s was the first double-century made in a second innings; until Gill’s 223 not out in 2026, every other one had been scored batting first. Afghanistan had made 291 for 5 at the 2023 World Cup, Australia were seven down chasing 292, and Maxwell finished 201 not out off 128 balls to take them to 293 for 7 with 19 balls left. He and his last partner were still there at the end, so the whole of the winning eighth-wicket stand was unbroken, and he made it while cramping badly enough that he could barely run between the wickets.
Shubman Gill | 223* v West Indies, Guwahati, 2026
Gill’s second ODI double-century came in a chase. West Indies had made 406, and Gill reached his hundred in 62 balls and his 200 in 117, the fastest double-century in ODI history, nine balls quicker than Ishan Kishan’s. He finished 223 not out off 133 balls, with 26 fours and eight sixes, and India won by eight wickets with 39 balls left; at 406 for 2 it was their highest successful ODI chase. It is the highest score made batting second, passing Maxwell’s 201 not out, and the third-highest ODI score of all.
Martin Guptill and Virender Sehwag
Guptill’s 237 not out off 163 balls came in a World Cup quarter-final against West Indies at Wellington in March 2015, with 24 fours and 11 sixes. It is the highest score made in a World Cup match.
Sehwag’s 219 at Indore in December 2011 came while he was captaining India against West Indies, in a total of 418 for 5. He was the second man to a double-century and, until Rohit’s 264, held the record.
The highest ODI score for other teams
Outside the double-centurions, Charles Coventry’s 194 not out for Zimbabwe against Bangladesh in 2009 and Saeed Anwar’s 194 for Pakistan against India at Chennai in 1997 are the highest. Anwar’s stood as the world record for twelve years until Coventry equalled it, and neither was beaten until Tendulkar’s 200.
Among the Associate nations, Scotland’s George Munsey made 191 against the Netherlands at Dundee in June 2025, the highest ODI score by anyone outside the Full Members.
