Harry Brook made the fastest ODI double century, and Sri Lanka still chased 430 to beat England

Harry Brook took Shubman Gill’s record for the fastest double century in one-day internationals in Rawalpindi on Thursday, and England still lost. Sri Lanka chased 430 with a ball to spare, and Janith Liyanage won it by hitting Josh Tongue for six off the fifth ball of the last over.

114 balls, and Gill’s record gone

Brook came in at 85 for 2 after 16 overs, after Sri Lanka had chosen to bowl first. He needed 42 balls for his fifty and 75 for his hundred, which is quick but not outrageous. After that it got silly. The next hundred took him 39 balls, and he reached 200 off his 114th, the fastest double century in one-day internationals.

That record had belonged to Shubman Gill for 22 days. Gill got to 200 off 117 balls against West Indies in Guwahati on 30 September, on his way to 223 not out in India’s chase of 406, and in doing so took the mark from Ishan Kishan, whose 126-ball double came against Bangladesh in 2022. Brook was three balls quicker than Gill. He was caught off the last ball of the innings for 202 from 116, with 21 fours and 10 sixes.

He is the first England batter to make an ODI double hundred. England’s previous highest score was Ben Stokes’s 182 against New Zealand at The Oval in 2023.

Root, then Jacks

Joe Root’s 69 off 66 balls was the quiet half of a 159-run stand for the third wicket, and Root was out in the 38th over with the score on 244. Will Jacks then hit 66 not out off 30 balls while Brook added the last 185 with him. Tom Banton had made 50 at the top. Dunith Wellalage, with 2 for 56 from his ten overs, was the only bowler to come out of it with any credit.

England’s 429 for 4 is the highest ODI total ever made in Pakistan.

Then Sri Lanka got 430

It didn’t look likely early. Sri Lanka were 24 for 2 inside five overs, with their captain Kusal Mendis run out without facing a ball. Avishka Fernando, with 97 off 83, and Pavan Rathnayake then added 166 for the third wicket, and Rathnayake kept going to 130 off 106 balls. Dasun Shanaka hit eight sixes in 97 off 50.

Both were gone by the end of the 44th over, and Sri Lanka still needed 67 off 36 balls. Liyanage, who had taken Brook’s wicket with the last ball of England’s innings, made 61 not out off 27. Tongue nearly took it back for England. He bowled Dunith Wellalage and Eshan Malinga with the second and third balls of the final over, which left seven needed off three. Asitha Fernando got a single, and Liyanage cleared the rope.

Only South Africa’s 438 for 9 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006 is a bigger successful chase in ODI history. This one goes past India’s 406 for 2 against West Indies in Guwahati last month, the same game in which Gill set the record Brook broke a few hours earlier.

The table

England have now lost both their games, to Pakistan by 87 runs on Tuesday and to this. Pakistan have won both of theirs. The rest of the round robin moves to Lahore, where England play Pakistan on Sunday, and the top two meet in the final there on 31 October.

Brook gets the record. Sri Lanka get the points, and I suspect the second half of that is what he will remember about this night.
