The first ODI here was played at the 2014 World Cup Qualifier, which is why the Netherlands and Canada opened it rather than the hosts. Four years later it staged the 2018 Under-19 World Cup final, in which India beat Australia by eight wickets with Manjot Kalra unbeaten on 101.
Bay Oval pitch report: what batting first is worth
| Format | Decided matches | Won batting first | Won chasing | Average first innings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tests | 6 | 4 | 2 | 420.5 |
| ODIs | 13 | 6 | 7 | 268.1 (12 full-length games) |
| T20Is | 15 | 11 | 4 | 185.2 (14 full-length games) |
For eight years this was a T20I ground where you batted first. Of the first 12 decided T20Is, the side batting first won 11, and the one exception was a rain-shortened win for New Zealand on the DLS method against Bangladesh in December 2023. Then it flipped. Australia chased 182 and 157 in October 2025, and South Africa knocked off 92 in March 2026 after bowling New Zealand out for 91. Those are the three most recent decided T20Is, and all three went to the chasing side. Three games is not a trend you can bank on, but it does mean the old “win the toss and bat” rule needs a question mark.
The 50-over game has been an even split, six wins batting first and seven chasing, and the toss winner has won seven of 13. The first innings averages 268.1 across the 12 full-length games, but that figure hides two different eras. The five ODIs played in 2019 and 2020 produced first-innings totals of 371, 324, 319, 243 and 296, an average of 310.6. The three played since then have brought 202, 264 in a rain-reduced 42-over game, and 223.
In Tests, the side batting first has done very well. The first-innings average across all six is 420.5, and New Zealand passed 500 in the first innings against South Africa in 2024 and West Indies in 2025. Oddly, the toss winner has won only two of the six.
India at Bay Oval
India have played five men’s internationals here and won four of them.
| Date | Format | Scores | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 26 Jan 2019 | ODI | India 324/4, New Zealand 234 | India won by 90 runs |
| 28 Jan 2019 | ODI | New Zealand 243, India 245/3 (43 overs) | India won by 7 wickets |
| 2 Feb 2020 | T20I | India 163/3, New Zealand 156/9 | India won by 7 runs |
| 11 Feb 2020 | ODI | India 296/7, New Zealand 300/5 (47.1 overs) | New Zealand won by 5 wickets |
| 20 Nov 2022 | T20I | India 191/6, New Zealand 126 | India won by 65 runs |
The two ODI wins in January 2019 came two days apart in the same series, and the second of them sealed India’s first bilateral ODI series win in New Zealand for ten years. The one defeat came 13 months later, when New Zealand chased 297 for the highest successful ODI chase at the ground. KL Rahul’s 112 off 113 balls in that game is still the best ODI score by an Indian batter here.
The T20I record is perfect. Jasprit Bumrah took 3/12 to defend 163 in 2020, and in 2022 Suryakumar Yadav made 111 not out off 51 balls, the highest T20I score at the ground. Deepak Hooda then took 4/10, which remains the ground’s best T20I bowling. Tim Southee took a hat-trick in the last over of India’s innings in that game and still finished on the losing side by 65 runs.
