Salem Spartans vs Kovai Kings: TNPL 2026 match 4 preview and prediction

Match 4 of TNPL 2026 puts together two sides that missed the 2025 playoffs in opposite ways. Salem Spartans won three of their seven games and went out anyway, on net run rate. Kovai Kings, twice champions of this competition, won two and finished below them. Both start this season needing points early, because a seven-game round robin does not leave room to recover from a slow fortnight.

One note on the name before anything else. The franchise that spent the last few seasons as Lyca Kovai Kings has changed hands and changed title partner: it is now VIDA Kovai Kings, VIDA being Hero MotoCorp’s electric mobility brand, under new owner Ananth Karthikeyan. Some fixture lists have not caught up and still carry the old name. The cricket side of it is unchanged, and Shahrukh Khan is still the captain.

How both teams finished the 2025 season

Salem and Trichy finished on the same three wins and the same six points. Trichy went to the playoffs and Salem went home, separated by a net run rate of plus 0.058 against minus 1.038. That is not a rounding error, it is the residue of losing badly rather than losing narrowly, and it is the single most useful thing to know about Salem going into a new campaign. Winning is not enough in this league. The margin is part of the qualification maths from the first week.

Kovai’s 2025 reads differently. Two wins from seven is a poor return for a side with two titles, but they came out of it with a net run rate of plus 0.049, the fifth best in the competition and only a hair behind the side that took the last playoff place. A team that loses five games and still holds a positive net run rate has been losing close ones. That is a more fixable problem than Salem’s.

Kovai Kings: two titles, one availability question

Kovai are one of the competition’s genuine powers. They shared the 2022 trophy with Chepauk Super Gillies after the final was washed out, then won it outright in 2023, which puts them second on the all-time list behind Chepauk’s four. Shahrukh Khan captains, and Sai Sudharsan was retained.

Sudharsan is the complication. He is in India’s squad for the two Tests in Sri Lanka, Galle from 15 August and Colombo from 23 August, subject to a fitness clearance, and there is a warm-up fixture in Colombo before that. Whether he takes the field at Natham on 6 August depends on where the India setup wants him in the first week of the month, and that is not a question anyone outside the dressing room can answer with confidence. A Kovai side with him and one without him are different propositions, and it matters more to them than to any other franchise in the league.

Salem Spartans: continuity and no trophy

Salem went into the July auction having already retained sixteen players, including M Mohammed, C Hari Nishaanth, S Ajith Ram and Boopathi Vaishna Kumar, and were left with a purse of about 4.7 lakh rupees. That is a deliberate bet on continuity rather than reinvention, and it is a reasonable one for a squad that was three wins from seven and lost its season on run rate rather than on ability.

What Salem do not have is a title. Nine completed seasons since 2016 have produced six different champions, and of the current eight franchises, Salem, Nellai Royal Kings and Trichy Grand Cholas are the three still waiting. This is the tenth season, and there was no tournament in 2020.

What Natham has shown so far

One match is a thin evidence base, and the opener at this ground on 4 August was an odd one. iDream Tiruppur Tamizhans, the defending champions, were bowled out for 107 in 15.4 overs, and Dindigul Dragons still needed 18.3 overs to knock the runs off, losing three wickets on the way. That is 218 runs and 13 wickets across the whole evening.

Read that carefully rather than quickly. It suggests a surface with something in it for the bowlers, particularly once the ball gets older and the spinners come on, which is the standard read on this ground anyway. It does not establish that Natham is a 110-run pitch, because a defending champion collapsing on opening night is at least as likely to be about the batting as about the pitch. The two matches on 5 August will tell us considerably more than the first one did.

Salem Spartans vs Kovai Kings prediction

My read leans slightly to Kovai, and the reasoning is about last season’s shape rather than this fixture’s history. A side that lost five games with a positive net run rate was competitive in most of them; a side that lost four with a run rate of minus 1.038 was not. If both squads are broadly what they were, Kovai’s ceiling looks the higher of the two.

That lean comes with a real caveat, which is Sudharsan. If he is not at Natham, Kovai’s batting loses its most accomplished player and the gap between these teams narrows to something close to nothing. Salem’s retention-heavy squad is settled and has been playing together for several seasons, which counts for more in the first week of a short tournament than it does in the third.

On the conditions, the opener suggests chasing sides should be reasonably comfortable, since Dindigul knocked off a small target without ever looking rushed, and both captains will likely want to bowl first if the toss allows it. A total in the 140s could well be competitive here. Anyone expecting a repeat of 107 is reading too much into one innings.
