Dindigul Dragons vs Chepauk Super Gillies: TNPL 2026 match 9 preview and prediction

The last time Dindigul Dragons and Chepauk Super Gillies met, Dindigul ended Chepauk’s season. That was Qualifier 2 of TNPL 2025, on this same ground, and it knocked out a side that had won all seven of its league matches. Thirteen months on they meet again at NPR College Ground with a combined record of one win from four, and Chepauk have not won anything yet.

The whole 2026 league stage is being played at NPR College Ground, which is also where last season’s playoffs were held, and both of these clubs left it in July 2025 having lost the match that mattered most to them.

Chepauk went first. They had gone through the 2025 league stage unbeaten, seven wins from seven, with a net run rate of 1.415, and then lost Qualifier 1 to Tiruppur and Qualifier 2 to Dindigul. That second defeat, on 4 July, was by four wickets with eight balls left: Chepauk made 178 for 7, Dindigul chased 182 for 6 in 18.4, and Vimal Khumar’s 65 from 30 balls took the game away. A team can hardly have a better league season and less to show for it.

Dindigul lasted two more days. In the final on 6 July, Tiruppur made 220 for 5 and bowled them out for 102, winning by 118 runs and taking their first TNPL title. Tushar Raheja made 77 from 46 in that innings and finished the season with 488 runs.

So this fixture carries something for both of them, and neither version of it is flattering.

Chepauk have now been on both sides of a 205 and lost twice

Chepauk’s two defeats this season are worth putting next to each other, because they are the same problem seen from opposite ends.

In match 3 on 5 August, Nellai Royal Kings made 204 for 6 and Chepauk were bowled out for 154 chasing it, losing by 50 runs. Two days later, in match 5, Chepauk batted first and made 205 for 8, and Tiruppur knocked the target off in 18 overs for the loss of three wickets.

Set a target of 205 and they could not defend it. Chase one and they could not get near it. For a club with four TNPL titles and an unbeaten league season behind them, losing the same total in both directions inside 48 hours is a strange way to start a campaign, and it points at the bowling rather than the batting. Our match 5 preview already had them and Tiruppur as the bottom two after one round, which felt harsh at the time.

Dindigul have one good day and one flat one

Dindigul opened the tournament by bowling Tiruppur out for 107 and chasing it in 18.3 overs, which was a genuine statement against the champions who had beaten them in the final. We wrote that one up as Dindigul bowling out the TNPL champions for 107.

Match 6 was the opposite. They batted first, made 170 for 7, and Nellai chased it down in 17.4 overs with six wickets standing. On a ground where the first-innings average is above 180, 170 was short, and they never had the game.

What the net run rates say

Both figures below are derived from the scorecards rather than copied, using the same method that reproduced the published numbers exactly after rounds one and two. A side bowled out has the full 20 overs counted against it, which is why Chepauk’s 154 in 17.2 overs hurts them more than the scoreboard suggests.

Chepauk are one of two sides still without a win, alongside Salem Spartans, and their minus 1.815 is heavy enough that it will follow them into the second half of the league stage even if the results turn. In a competition where five of eight teams finished 2025 on a position decided by run rate rather than points, that is not a detail to wave through.

What NPR College Ground has done in eight matches

Every match of this tournament has been played here, so nobody arrives with local knowledge anybody else lacks.

The side batting second has won six of eight, and the last four in a row. The first-innings average is 180.5, or 191.0 if you set aside Tiruppur’s 107 in the opener as the outlier it was. Three first innings have passed 200 and two of the three were chased down, including Saturday’s 239 for 4, which Madurai Panthers overhauled in 19.3 overs. That is the highest total the ground has produced this season and the highest chase, on the same afternoon.

Note that the last four wins for the chasing side span both an afternoon and an evening game on each of the last two days, so this is not a dew story. The surface is simply getting easier to bat on second, and 190 is closer to par than commanding.

Our read on Dindigul Dragons vs Chepauk Super Gillies

I lean Dindigul, though with less conviction than the bare records suggest.

The case for them is that they have already done the hard thing at this ground once. Bowling a side out for 107 is a repeatable skill in a way that a single big batting night is not, and it is the one thing Chepauk have failed at twice, conceding 204 and then 206 in consecutive games. Dindigul’s 170 in match 6 looks like the anomaly rather than the pattern.

The case against is that Chepauk’s batting has not actually been the problem. A side that makes 205 on this surface will win more often than it loses, and their 154 came from a collapse rather than a slow start. If their bowling holds anyone under 190 they are live.

Given how the venue has behaved, the toss could matter more than either squad list. Whoever fields first should fancy it, and if Chepauk bowl second I would expect this to be closer than a 0 from 2 record implies. A Dindigul win is the likelier outcome, but a comfortable one would surprise me.

Marking our own homework

These previews now stand at three from six. We leaned Tiruppur in the opener and they were bowled out for 107, tipped Chepauk in match 3 and they lost by 50, and leaned Kovai in match 7 only for Madurai to chase 240. The three that came in were Kovai in match 4, Tiruppur in match 5 and Nellai in match 6.

One secondary call from the match 7 piece did land. It said that on this ground whoever bowled second could find the target easier than the scoreboard suggested, and Madurai then chased the highest total of the tournament with three balls to spare. Getting the shape of a game right while getting the winner wrong is still getting it wrong, but it is worth recording which half was which.
