Inter came into the derby unbeaten in Serie A, and they were 2-0 down at San Siro inside ten minutes.

Three days after losing 4-2 at home to Bologna, AC Milan beat Inter 3-1 in the derby at San Siro on Saturday night. Diego Moreira set up both of Milan’s goals in the first ten minutes and then scored the third himself from a free kick. It is Inter’s first Serie A defeat of the season, and it came in Ruben Amorim’s first Milan derby.
Two goals in ten minutes
Moreira had missed the Bologna game through injury, and he took four minutes to make up for it. He beat Carlos Augusto down the right and crossed, and Christian Pulisic headed in from close range. On ten minutes Moreira took a corner, Adrien Rabiot got to it at the far post, and his finish went in off the post.
Inter got one back on 22 minutes. Manuel Akanji flicked on a Hakan Çalhanoğlu corner and Alessandro Bastoni headed it in, his first goal in 20 derby appearances. Then, two minutes before half-time, Moreira curled a left-footed free kick from around 25 yards past Josep Martínez. According to Opta, it is only the third direct free kick a Milan player has scored in this derby since 2004-05, after Andrea Pirlo in December 2007 and Theo Hernández in the Supercoppa in January 2025.
Inter had their chances
Mike Maignan had already made a sharp save from Djed Spence before half-time, and Carlos Augusto headed wide in the 56th minute. With about a quarter of an hour left, referee Marco Guida gave Inter a penalty for handball against Mario Gila, but VAR overturned it because the ball had hit Gila’s body, not his arm. Inter did not score again.
Chivu: “We had the wrong approach”
Cristian Chivu had problems before kick-off. Pio Esposito was unwell, Ange-Yoan Bonny “had a fever until 4.30pm and was vomiting all night” and captain Lautaro Martínez is out with a hamstring injury. He did not hide behind any of it.
“It hurts, it hurts to lose a derby where both we and everyone else had different expectations,” he said. “We had the wrong approach.”
He is right not to. The illness changed Inter’s front line, but the first goal came from a cross, the second from a corner and the third from a free kick. Defending those has nothing to do with who is up front.
Amorim is not talking about the title yet
“It was not an amazing game, but it’s an amazing night for our fans,” Amorim told DAZN Italia. “It was important for us to win this after Wednesday so we can move forward.” He did not get carried away about the title either, saying it is “going to be very hard to win the Scudetto in the first year”.
Milan have now won three Serie A derbies in a row for the first time since Carlo Ancelotti’s side won four between 2002 and 2004, and they are unbeaten in eight against Inter in all competitions, with six wins and two draws. Rabiot has scored or assisted in each of his last five Serie A games.
The win lifts Milan to fourth on 21 points, four behind Inter on 25. Lazio, also on 25 and ahead of Inter on goal difference, host Cagliari on Sunday and can move three points clear with a win.
