For a couple of hours on Thursday evening, NorthEast United were top of the ISL. Their 2-0 win over Churchill Brothers at the PJN Stadium in Fatorda finished before Mohun Bagan Super Giant kicked off against Odisha FC, and it took Mohun Bagan’s 3-2 win that night to push them back into second.
The gap is one point. Mohun Bagan have 12 from five games, NorthEast 11 from five, and NorthEast are still unbeaten after three wins and two draws. They have scored eight and let in two.
González early, Moyano at the death
The opener came in the 16th minute. NorthEast broke quickly, Jithin MS found Ethyan González, who finished with the outside of his boot. Churchill pushed harder after half-time, but NorthEast’s back line held, and the game was settled in the third minute of stoppage time when Antonio Moyano’s right-footed shot from Abdul Rabeeh’s pass took a deflection and went in.
It leaves Churchill ninth on three points.
What happened in Guwahati on 12 October
The reason a single point separates the top two goes back to both sides’ first game. Mohun Bagan went to Guwahati and lost 1-0. Jithin, on as a half-time substitute, scored in the second minute of stoppage time after Vishal Kaith’s save came back off the post.
Mohun Bagan have won every game since. NorthEast have not lost one. Six days after beating Mohun Bagan they put four past Kerala Blasters in Guwahati, with Alaeddine Ajaraie scoring twice, and Thursday’s win in Goa made it five without defeat. It is early, five games into a 24-game season, but the side Mohun Bagan could not score against are the one keeping pace with them.
