Mohammedan Sporting were 3-1 down at the Bangalore Football Stadium on Friday afternoon, pulled it back to 3-3, and still lost. Akshunna Tyagi scored in the first minute of stoppage time to give FC Bengaluru United a 4-3 win, their first in the Indian Football League.
For Mohammedan it is two defeats from two, and both have come at the very end. Shillong Lajong beat them 1-0 at Kalyani on 31 October with a 90th-minute goal from the substitute Nelson Rymbai. This one will hurt more, because the comeback was done and a point looked safe.
Two down inside 20 minutes
Bengaluru United, newly promoted and playing their first home game in the league, started as if they had been waiting all week for it. Marat Tarek put them ahead early and a second goal followed soon after, so Mohammedan were 2-0 down before the 20-minute mark. Maharabam Maxion pulled one back in the 25th minute, and it stayed 2-1 at half-time.
Ngangbam Naocha Singh restored the two-goal lead early in the second half. Mohammedan answered within a few minutes through Lalthankima, and with about ten minutes left Lalremsanga Fanai headed the equaliser to make it 3-3.
That should have been the story. Instead Tyagi had the last word.
Back in the second tier, and still waiting for a point
Mohammedan were relegated from the ISL last season. Two games into life in the IFL, they have scored three and let in five. The attack turned up today. The problem is a defence that conceded four, and a habit of switching off just as the board for added time goes up.
Bengaluru United, beaten 1-0 by Dempo in their opener by a header in the eighth minute of stoppage time, now have a late goal of their own to celebrate.
