Leeds scored twice in two minutes, and Matthias Jaissle lost his first game as Newcastle manager

Leeds United beat Newcastle United 4-1 at Elland Road on Monday night, and the game was effectively over by half-time. Lewis Miley put through his own net on 32 minutes, Jayden Bogle scored two minutes later, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin made it three in first-half stoppage time. Noah Okafor added a fourth on 59 minutes. Bazoumana Toure got one back for Newcastle on 90, by which point it was decoration.

Two minutes, two goals, and Newcastle never recovered

The opening goal was cruel on Miley. Ao Tanaka hit it from the edge of the box, the ball clipped one defender and then Miley, and the double deflection spun past Lukas Hornicek in the Newcastle goal. Nobody in a black-and-white shirt could have done much about that.

What happened 120 seconds later was a different matter. Bogle made it 2-0, and from there Newcastle stopped resembling a side with a plan. Calvert-Lewin’s goal in first-half stoppage time came from a defensive mistake rather than anything Leeds had to build, and Okafor’s finish just before the hour mark took it past the point where a comeback was worth discussing.

Calvert-Lewin is having the season people stopped expecting

There was a stretch of Calvert-Lewin’s Everton career where the conversation about him was almost entirely medical. He joined Leeds in 2025 after nine years at Goodison, scored 14 Premier League goals last season, and on Monday he spent 90 minutes making Newcastle’s centre-backs look like they were guessing.

Daniel Farke was asked about him afterwards. “He’s in outstanding shape and he plays with lots of confidence,” the Leeds manager said. “I expect him to lead the group and he’s taken the responsibility.” That is the language of a coach who has found his number nine, and Leeds have needed one for a while.

Jaissle’s first loss, and the Elanga problem

This was Matthias Jaissle’s first defeat since he took the Newcastle job. His explanation was blunt enough. “You need to bring the fundamentals on the pitch against a physical and strong team,” he said. “Leeds are so intense, especially at home and we couldn’t match that physicality in the first half.”

He is also short of attacking options. Anthony Elanga picked up an injury in training and faces further scans, with Jaissle suggesting it could keep him out for a while. Newcastle have scored seven and conceded eight in four games, which is not a crisis, but it is not a team that looks settled either.

Where it leaves the table

Leeds are third on eight points from two wins and two draws, level with Hull City and ahead on goal difference. Arsenal and Manchester City have won all four and sit on 12. Newcastle drop to 12th on five.

The stat worth holding onto is this one: Leeds have gone unbeaten through their opening four Premier League fixtures only three times before, in 1995-96, 1998-99 and 2001-02. Four games is four games, and Farke himself has spent the season so far refusing to get carried away. But Elland Road on a Monday night under the lights, four goals and a Newcastle side picked apart, is the kind of evening that changes what a dressing room thinks is possible.
