Hornicek let a tame shot through, and Everton have beaten Newcastle twice in four days

Everton beat Newcastle 1-0 at St James’ Park on Monday night, four days after knocking them out of the Carabao Cup 3-1 on Merseyside. Thierno Barry scored the only goal four minutes into the second half, and Newcastle were booed off at half-time and again at the final whistle.

It is Everton’s first away league win of the season, and it takes David Moyes’s side up to seventh on 13 points. Newcastle drop to 13th on 11.

A goal Newcastle gave away

Everton took a free-kick quickly, Tyrique George got in, and his shot was not a hard one. It still squirmed under goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek, and Barry had a tap-in. VAR checked it for offside and let it stand. Matthias Jaissle thought it should have gone for something else: he said Barry had caught Fabian Schär with an elbow in the build-up.

Everton should have been ahead long before then. Barry wasted a good chance of his own in the first half, and with the last kick before the break Harrison Armstrong, completely unmarked, sent a first-time shot wide from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s pull-back.

Newcastle barely threatened

The closest Newcastle came was in the 66th minute, when Anthony Elanga tried to force a cross in at the back post and the ball came back off the post before Everton cleared. Substitute Yoane Wissa had their best chances late on, and Jordan Pickford kept one of them out with an outstretched leg.

Then it got worse. Jacob Ramsey, another substitute, was booked twice in stoppage time and sent off. Newcastle have now lost four of their last five games in all competitions.

“I am responsible for that”

Jaissle, who coached Red Bull Salzburg and Al-Ahli before this job, is in his first season at Newcastle after Eddie Howe left in the summer. He did not argue with the crowd. “After a performance like that, I can understand that. That’s a reality, and I am responsible for that,” he told Sky Sports. He said his side were not brave enough on the ball and hit too many long balls. Confidence is low, he added, among the experienced players as much as the young ones.

Jamie Carragher, on Sky’s Monday Night Football, said Newcastle had looked flat at home lately and were in for a tough season.

Moyes said nobody enjoys facing the same team twice in such a short space, but that winning in the cup and then in the league was “hugely important”. He also wants more from his striker. “Thierno’s had some big opportunities, and we need him to finish. He was on the spot today.”

Still no Grealish

Everton were without Jack Grealish again. The on-loan Manchester City winger was left out of Thursday’s cup tie for a breach of club discipline, and this time the club listed him as not match fit. Moyes said he did not yet know whether Grealish would be available for Friday’s home game against Coventry. Asked if there was a way back for him, Moyes said: “Of course there is.”

Newcastle are at Fulham on Saturday.
