Barcelona were one win from La Liga’s best ever start, and Mbappé’s 100th Real Madrid goal won the Clásico
Kylian Mbappé scored twice at the Camp Nou, the late winner his 100th goal for Real Madrid, and Barcelona lost a La Liga game for the first time this season.

Barcelona had won all nine of their La Liga games and needed one more for the best start to a season in the competition’s history. They had 62 per cent of the ball against Real Madrid at the Camp Nou on Sunday and still lost 2-1. Kylian Mbappé scored in the 41st and 87th minutes, and the second was his 100th goal for the club.
Raphinha had equalised on the hour, and for long spells after that it was Barcelona pushing for a winner. Madrid got it on the break instead. Hansi Flick’s side have now lost two in a row, after the 4-2 Champions League defeat to PSG earlier in the week ended their winning run in all competitions.
A scruffy opener and a late break
The first goal came from a mistake. Yan Diomandé crossed, Gerard Martín’s attempted clearance struck Mbappé, and the ball went in off him four minutes before half-time.
Barcelona’s equaliser was better worked. Pedri found Raphinha alone inside the area in the 61st minute, and Lunin got a hand to the shot but could not keep it out. Lamine Yamal went close from distance in the closing stages too.
Andriy Lunin was only in goal because Thibaut Courtois pulled out on the morning of the match with flu. He made five saves. At the other end, Joan García made three.
The winner came three minutes from time. Barcelona lost the ball, Jude Bellingham moved it on to Eduardo Camavinga, who had come on in the 80th minute, and Camavinga set up Mbappé to finish.
Madrid did it without Vinícius
José Mourinho was without Vinícius Júnior, who is serving a four-match ban for his red card against Villarreal on 10 October. Diomandé started, and it was his cross that led to the opener.
Barcelona were missing Dani Olmo, who is out for around a month with the injury he picked up against PSG.
What it does to the table
Barcelona are still top on 27 points, but the gap has shrunk. Atlético Madrid are two points behind on 25, and Real Madrid are third on 24.
The result also puts Madrid back in front in the all-time head-to-head. The two clubs went into Sunday level on 106 wins each in official meetings, counting the 1902 Copa de la Coronación, so this was Madrid’s 107th.
Mbappé now has 11 La Liga goals in 10 games this season. He missed the Clásico at the Camp Nou in May with a hamstring injury, and Barcelona won that one 2-0 to clinch the title. On Sunday he played, and Barcelona’s record chase is over.
