Amrinder Singh kept out his old club on his first Kerala Blasters start, and Mumbai City are still without a win

Amrinder Singh won the ISL Shield and the ISL Cup with Mumbai City in 2020-21. On Sunday, in his first league start for Kerala Blasters, he spent the evening keeping his old club out, and the first home game of Ashley Westwood’s season in Kochi ended 0-0.

It was a fair result in a game where both goalkeepers were busy. Mumbai City are still waiting for a first win under Manolo Márquez, and Kerala Blasters have four points from three games.

Amrinder’s evening

Westwood changed his goalkeeper after the 4-1 defeat to NorthEast United in Guwahati, leaving out Arsh Shaikh, who had started the first two games. Amrinder, who is 33 and joined from Odisha FC earlier this month, was tested within half an hour. Muhamad Ajsal beat Aibanbha Dohling and cut the ball back for Noufal PN on 23 minutes, and Amrinder saved. Two minutes later Noufal curled one at him on the counter, and he punched it clear.

The closest Mumbai came was soon after half-time, when Amrinder dealt with a set piece and Kerala got it clear. He was down quickly again to stop a shot from Noufal on 70 minutes, and with two minutes left he stretched full length to keep out Hmingthanmawia Valpuia’s strike from outside the box.

Kerala could not finish

The hosts had their moments too, mostly through Sanan Mohammed and Adrián Luna. Sanan beat Valpuia and forced a save from Rehenesh TP after 18 minutes, and Nebojsa Kosovic tested the Mumbai goalkeeper again from distance in the second half. Luna headed one wide early on and was the player most likely to make something happen, but he went off in stoppage time after going down with what looked like cramp.

Westwood sent on Andre Green, who scored in the opening win at Inter Kashi, for Momo Yansane on the hour. It made Kerala louder in the stands more than it made them dangerous on the pitch. Yansane had earlier been the first player booked, for a foul on Valpuia.

Mumbai City still waiting

Mumbai came to Kochi without Vikram Partap Singh, who Márquez says will miss most of the season, and with only two goals in two games, both penalties. They did not add to that, but they looked more dangerous in open play than they had in either of their first two games. Kerala had more of the ball, but Mumbai had the better chances, and Amrinder was the main reason they did not take all three points.

That leaves them on two points from three games. They are at home at the Mumbai Football Arena next Sunday, and on this evidence a first league win under Márquez might not be far away.
