Arsenal agree 90 million euros for Bruno Guimaraes, and Newcastle’s summer becomes a clear-out

Arsenal have agreed a fee of around 90 million euros with Newcastle United for Bruno Guimaraes, according to L’Equipe, which puts the Premier League champions within touching distance of a signing they have been chasing for most of July. Nothing has been signed. Bonuses and agent commissions are still being argued over, and neither club has announced anything.

What has changed is the number. Newcastle spent weeks insisting Guimaraes was a 100 million euro player and turned down Arsenal bids of 70 million and 80 million to prove it. Ninety is not 100.

The valuation Newcastle could not hold

Newcastle’s reference point was never really Guimaraes. It was Sandro Tonali, sold to Tottenham Hotspur on 6 July in a package worth up to 100 million pounds, with 92.5 million paid up front. That was a Tottenham club record, and it set the internal benchmark at St James’ Park: if Tonali went for that, the captain could not go for less.

The problem with that logic is that it only works if you are willing to keep the player. Guimaraes told the club weeks ago that he wanted to leave, agreed personal terms with Arsenal on a five-year contract, and asked for the situation to be resolved before he was due back for pre-season on 31 July. At that point Newcastle were negotiating from a position they had already talked themselves out of.

Ninety million euros is roughly 77 million pounds. Measured against the Tonali sale, it is a markedly worse piece of business for a player Newcastle themselves rated more highly.

A captain, a manager, and a record signing gone

Guimaraes is 28, has been at Newcastle since 2022, captains the side, and is under contract until June 2028. On any normal summer, a club losing that player would be the story on its own.

This has not been a normal summer. Tonali went in early July. Eddie Howe, who took charge in November 2021 and stayed nearly five years, left on 30 July, with Matthias Jaissle reported as his replacement. Now the captain is one set of agent negotiations away from joining the team that just won the league. Whatever Newcastle’s owners intended when the window opened on 15 June, the shape of it now reads as a rebuild rather than a refresh.

There is a version of this that works. Selling Tonali for 100 million and Guimaraes for 77 leaves an enormous amount to spend, a new manager gets to pick his own midfield, and Newcastle have shown before that they can recruit well when they are not paying a premium for reputation. But that argument only holds if the money is spent, and spent well, in the month that remains before the window shuts.

What Arsenal are getting

For Arsenal the logic is simpler. They won the title last season, their first in 22 years, and Mikel Arteta is adding to a squad that did not obviously need rescuing. Guimaraes gives him a midfielder who can break lines and break up play, which is a rarer combination than the fee suggests.

The caution is worth repeating. This is a reported agreement between two clubs, not a completed transfer. Deals of this size have collapsed over agent fees before, and until Newcastle and Arsenal both put their names to it, Guimaraes remains a Newcastle player.
