Lionel Messi has won 47 trophies, more than any player in the history of the men’s game. Dani Alves is second on 43 and Hossam Ashour third on 39, and those three names sit in that order on every current list.

Below the top three, the lists stop agreeing — sometimes by four trophies on the same player. This page gives the ranking, breaks Messi’s 47 down trophy by trophy so it can be checked, and explains where the disagreement comes from.

Thirty-five of the 47 came at Barcelona across 17 seasons. The six with Argentina are the ones that took him longest: he lost four senior finals — the 2014 World Cup and the Copa America in 2007, 2015 and 2016 — before the 2021 Copa America broke the run.

What has changed since 2024

Two things, and one of them is a trophy that never arrived.

The 47th was the MLS Cup on 6 December 2025, Inter Miami beating Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 at Chase Stadium. Messi set up Rodrigo De Paul for the goal that settled it just past the hour and added a second assist late. It was Inter Miami’s first MLS Cup and made them the 16th franchise to win one in the league’s 30-year history.

The one that did not arrive was a second World Cup. Argentina reached the final of the 2026 tournament and lost 1-0 to Spain after extra time, Ferran Torres scoring in the 106th minute against ten men. So Messi’s total stands at 47 rather than 48, and his last trophy remains the MLS Cup.

Dani Alves, the man Messi passed

For years the answer to this question was Dani Alves, and his 43 is a genuinely strange collection: five trophies at Sevilla, 23 at Barcelona, two at Juventus, six at PSG, one at Sao Paulo, plus two Copa Americas, two Confederations Cups, an Olympic gold and a U-20 World Cup with Brazil.

The 23 at Barcelona included six La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues. The one trophy missing from the whole haul is the World Cup — he played at two World Cups and never won one, which is a useful reminder that a trophy count is not the same thing as a career.

Some counts put Alves above 43 by including Brazilian regional titles from his early years at Bahia. Most do not, and 43 is the figure to quote.

Hossam Ashour and 39 trophies at one club

The third name is the one most readers will not know. Hossam Ashour spent 17 years at Al Ahly in Cairo, from 2003 to 2020, and won 39 trophies without playing for anyone else:

That is more than anyone else on this list managed at a single club — Messi’s Barcelona haul is 35, Ryan Giggs’s Manchester United haul is in the mid-30s. It is also a reminder that these lists reward being in the right dressing room for a long time at least as much as they reward being the best player in it.

The next names, and why the counts disagree

The four questions that move the numbers:

The basis used above is the broad one: every senior team trophy, super cups, Olympic gold and the U-20 World Cup included. That is what produces 47 for Messi. Alves’s 43 is quoted on a slightly tighter basis that leaves the Brazilian regional titles out, so even the two figures at the top of this page are not built quite the same way — which is the point rather than an exception to it.

Where Cristiano Ronaldo sits

Not in the top three, and not especially close. The published counts put him between 33 and 37, which leaves him at least ten behind Messi on any count.

He has been adding to it, though. Al Nassr won the 2025-26 Saudi Pro League, their first title in seven years and his first major club trophy since Serie A in 2019-20, and it made him a league champion in four countries on two continents — something no amount of counting arguments takes away.
