GOAT of football: Messi vs Ronaldo, and where the debate stands now

For most of two decades the GOAT of football debate — greatest of all time — came down to two players, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, and to one gap in the argument: neither had won a World Cup. That gap has now closed in both directions. Messi won it in 2022. Ronaldo played his sixth and final World Cup in 2026 and finished without it.

This is where the two careers actually stand: the trophies, the individual awards, the goal records, and the parts of the argument that trophy counts do not settle. All figures are current to 7 August 2026. Both men are still playing club football, so the career totals at the foot of this page will keep moving.

Who is the GOAT of football?

On the two measures most people reach for first, Messi leads. He has eight Ballon d’Or awards to Ronaldo’s five, and he has the World Cup. On the two measures Ronaldo’s supporters reach for, Ronaldo leads: he has scored more international goals than anyone in the history of the men’s game, and he has won league titles in four different countries on two continents.

Both of those summaries are true, which is why the argument has never ended. What has changed since 2022 is that the biggest open question in it — could Ronaldo still win a World Cup — has been answered, and the answer was no.

This is the half of the comparison where the gap is clearest, and it is the half that decided the debate for most people.

Ronaldo’s international record is not thin, and the Nations League row is the one people forget: Portugal are the only country to have won it twice, in 2019 and again in June 2025, when they beat Spain on penalties in Munich after a 2-2 draw. Ronaldo scored the equaliser in that final.

The league titles row needs its working shown, because it is the one that moved most recently. Messi’s 13 are ten La Liga titles with Barcelona, two Ligue 1 titles with Paris Saint-Germain and the 2025 MLS Cup with Inter Miami. Ronaldo’s eight are three Premier Leagues with Manchester United, two La Liga titles with Real Madrid, two Serie A titles with Juventus and the 2025-26 Saudi Pro League with Al Nassr.

That last one arrived in May 2026 and was a genuinely significant night for him. Al Nassr beat Damac 4-1 on the final evening of the season with Ronaldo scoring twice, Al Hilal finished two points behind, and it was the club’s first league title in seven years. It was also Ronaldo’s first major club trophy since the 2019-20 Serie A title with Juventus, and it made him a champion in a fourth country.

Messi’s ten La Liga titles all came at Barcelona, in the era that produced the moment his supporters still reach for first — the solo run against Getafe in 2007 that gave the game the “Ankara Messi” commentary, and which Barcelona’s own fans later voted the best goal in the club’s history. He is also, by some distance, the leading scorer in El Clasico, with 26 goals against Real Madrid to Ronaldo’s 18.

Messi’s eighth Ballon d’Or came in October 2023, on the back of the World Cup, and no other player has more than five. On The Best FIFA Men’s Player — the award FIFA has run since 2016 — Messi leads 3-2, and he is the only player to have won it three times.

The goal records, which run the other way

If the trophy tables belong to Messi, the raw scoring numbers belong to Ronaldo, and by margins that are not close.

Ronaldo’s 146 international goals and 233 caps are both all-time records in men’s football, and neither looks likely to be beaten soon. Messi’s 125 for Argentina is his country’s record.

The one scoring record that went the other way is the one that mattered most to both of them. At the 2026 World Cup Messi passed Miroslav Klose’s men’s mark of 16 and finished on 21 World Cup goals, more than any man or woman has scored in the tournament’s history. Eight of those came in 2026 alone, at the age of 39.

What the 2026 World Cup did to the argument

Both played their sixth World Cup in North America, and both left without the ending they wanted.

Ronaldo, 41, became the first player to score at six different World Cups when he scored against Uzbekistan in Houston, and he took his tournament tally to three. Portugal then went out in the last 16, beaten by the eventual champions Spain, 1-0 to a stoppage-time Mikel Merino goal. He had said before kick-off that it would be his last World Cup, so there was no ambiguity about what the whistle meant. Six tournaments, no trophy — and, cruelly, his best run came at the first attempt, a semi-final as a 21-year-old in 2006.

Messi went further and still fell short. Argentina reached the final as holders and lost 1-0 to Spain after extra time, Ferran Torres scoring in the 106th minute against ten men. Messi did not score, which handed the Golden Boot to Kylian Mbappe, but he had carried Argentina there, most obviously in the semi-final against England, where both goals came from his passes in the closing minutes.

So the World Cup line in the debate now reads: Messi has one, Ronaldo has none, and Ronaldo has confirmed he will not get another chance. Messi has never given a straight answer on his international future, but the next World Cup is four years away and he would be 43. Whether a single tournament should carry that much weight in judging two twenty-year careers is a fair question, because World Cup margins are brutal and often have very little to do with who the best player on the pitch was. But fair or not, it is the line the argument always returns to.

What the tables do not settle

Trophy counts flatter the player who spent his career at the strongest clubs, and both of these players did. They do not capture how the goals were scored, what each man did to the teams around him, or the fact that Messi has 419 career assists to Ronaldo’s 261 — a gap that says something about two very different kinds of forward.

They also do not capture longevity in the shape Ronaldo has it. Winning a league title at 41, in a fourth country, more than two decades after his first senior goal, is not a thing the record books have a column for.

The honest answer is that Messi has the stronger case on honours and awards, Ronaldo has the stronger case on volume and durability, and which one you call the greatest depends on which of those you think the word means. What has changed is that the World Cup half of the argument is settled. Ronaldo is done with the tournament by his own confirmation, and Messi has the trophy in hand either way.
