Lowest Score in T20 World Cup: Every Total Under 73

The lowest score in T20 World Cup history is 39, made by the Netherlands in 2014 and matched by Uganda in 2024. The full list of lowest totals, checked after the 2026 edition.

The lowest score in a men’s T20 World Cup is 39 all out, and two teams share it. The Netherlands were shot out for 39 by Sri Lanka at Chattogram on 24 March 2014, and Uganda were bowled out for the same figure by West Indies at Providence on 8 June 2024. Ten editions have now been played and nobody has gone below it.

The 2026 tournament in India and Sri Lanka rewrote the other end of the record book — seven of the ten highest totals in T20 World Cup history were made inside those four weeks — and left this list completely untouched. The lowest anyone was dismissed for in 2026 was 95.

The two 39s are level on runs and nothing else

The Netherlands took 63 balls over theirs; Uganda took 72. Tom Cooper’s 16 was the only double-figure score in the Dutch innings, Ajantha Mendis took 3 for 12 and Angelo Mathews 3 for 16, and Sri Lanka knocked the runs off in five overs to win by nine wickets.

Uganda’s 39 came in a chase of 174 in only their third World Cup match. Akeal Hosein took 5 for 11 and West Indies won by 134 runs.

Uganda played four innings and three of them are on this list

Uganda qualified for the first time in 2024, played four matches, and have not been back since — the 2026 tournament went ahead without them. Three of those four innings sit inside the eight lowest totals the tournament has produced: 58 against Afghanistan, 39 against West Indies and 40 against New Zealand. The fourth was the chase of 78 that beat Papua New Guinea, their only win.

The 40 at Tarouba is the strangest innings on the whole list. It lasted 18.4 overs, which is longer than any other total under 50 has survived, and it came at 2.14 runs an over — the slowest completed innings in T20 World Cup history. Kenneth Waiswa’s 11 was the only double-figure score and the innings contained three boundaries in total. Tim Southee finished with 3 for 4 and Trent Boult 2 for 7, five wickets for 11 runs between them in eight overs, and New Zealand were home in 5.2 overs with 88 balls to spare.

2024 was far harder to bat in than any other edition

Across ten tournaments, 46 innings have ended with a side all out for under 100. Thirteen of them came in 2024 alone. Widen the lens and the gap does not close: of the eight totals under 60 in the tournament’s history, five were made in that one edition, and the other three are spread across 2014 and 2021.

The surprise is where they happened. The 2024 tournament is remembered for the drop-in pitch at Nassau County in New York, which was widely criticised and which produced some genuinely awkward cricket. But all five of the sub-60 totals were made in the Caribbean — at Providence, Tarouba and North Sound. New York’s lowest was Sri Lanka’s 77 against South Africa.

England’s demolition of Oman at North Sound was the most efficient of them. Oman were bowled out for 47 in 80 balls, with Shoaib Khan’s 11 the only double-figure score, and England used Adil Rashid (4 for 11), Jofra Archer (3 for 12) and Mark Wood (3 for 12) to do it. The reply took 3.1 overs. Jos Buttler made 24 not out from eight balls and the match finished with 101 balls unused.

2026 rewrote the record book at the other end

Only two sides were bowled out for under 100 at the 2026 tournament: Sri Lanka for 95 against England at Pallekele on 22 February, and Namibia for 97 against Pakistan at the SSC four days earlier. Neither is close to this list.

Sri Lanka’s was the lower of the two and it followed a modest England total. England made 146 for 9, Phil Salt top-scoring with 62 on a surface gripping for the spinners. Sri Lanka were 34 for 5 inside the powerplay, Will Jacks taking three of those wickets, and were dismissed for 95 in 16.4 overs with Dasun Shanaka’s 30 the only real resistance. England won by 51 runs.

Set that against what the same tournament did to the top of the record book: seven of the ten highest totals in T20 World Cup history were made in 2026, including both innings of a semi-final. A month that produced 13 totals of 200 or more produced nothing lower than 95.

The lowest total by a full-member nation

West Indies’ 55 against England at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on 23 October 2021 is the lowest score any full-member side has made at a T20 World Cup, and it was made by a side holding the trophy at the time. Chris Gayle’s 13 was the only double-figure score. Adil Rashid’s figures were 2.2-0-2-4. England chased it in 8.2 overs to win by six wickets.

Afghanistan’s 56 against South Africa in the 2024 semi-final is next, and before 2021 the mark belonged to New Zealand, who were bowled out for 60 by Sri Lanka at Chattogram in 2014. Ireland’s 68 against West Indies in 2010 is lower than both of those but was made seven years before Ireland became a Test nation.

India’s lowest T20 World Cup total

India have never been near the all-time list. Their lowest is 79 all out in 18.1 overs against New Zealand at Nagpur on 15 March 2016, chasing 127. Mitchell Santner took 4 for 11 and Ish Sodhi 3 for 18; MS Dhoni’s 30 was the top score and six Indian batters were dismissed for fewer than five.

Next is 110 for 7 against New Zealand at Dubai in 2021, and then 111 all out against South Africa at Ahmedabad on 22 February 2026, chasing 188. That third one is worth keeping in mind whenever a collapse gets written up as a crisis: India were bowled out for 111 at the 2026 tournament and won it a fortnight later.

One innings that is not on the list

Oman were 65 for 9 against Bangladesh at Dharamsala on 13 March 2016, which looks low enough to belong. It does not, because it was not a 20-over innings. Rain kept interrupting the match after Bangladesh had made 180 for 2, and Oman were eventually set a revised target of 120 from 12 overs. They finished on 65 for 9 and lost by 54 runs on D/L.

It was a completed innings, so it appears in raw innings-by-innings data, but comparing 72 balls with 120 is not a comparison. Any version of this list that ranks Oman’s 65 alongside the totals above has not checked the overs column.
