Highest score in T20 World Cup: Sri Lanka’s 260 still leads a list 2026 rewrote
Sri Lanka’s 260 for 6 against Kenya in 2007 is still the highest team total at a men’s T20 World Cup. India came within four runs of it in 2026, an edition that produced seven of the ten biggest scores the tournament has seen.

The highest score in a men’s T20 World Cup is Sri Lanka’s 260 for 6 against Kenya, made at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on 14 September 2007, in the opening week of the first edition. Nine tournaments have been played since and nobody has passed it. India came within four runs in February 2026 and stopped there.
What 2026 did change was everything underneath. Seven of the ten highest totals in the tournament’s history were made in that one month, including both innings of a semi-final and the biggest score any side has made in a final. A list that had barely moved between 2007 and 2024 was rewritten in four weeks, and most versions of it still circulating were compiled before it finished.

Two checks that catch a missing row
Lists like this one fail in a specific way: a row goes missing and nothing about the page looks wrong. Two bits of arithmetic catch it in about ten seconds.
Sort the ten by edition. One is from 2007, two from 2016, seven from 2026, and 1 plus 2 plus 7 comes to 10. If a version of this table does not reconcile that way, it has dropped something.
Then look at rows five and six. India’s 253 for 7 and England’s 246 for 7 are the two innings of the same match, and they add to 499, which is the highest match aggregate a T20 World Cup has produced. A list carrying one of those without the other has lost half a semi-final.
Why other versions of this list disagree
They are snapshots, and mostly they are honest ones. Several widely shared versions were built during the 2026 tournament and stop before the final on 8 March, so they put West Indies’ 254 second and never mention India’s 255. One of them carries its cut-off date in its own headline: 27 February 2026. Each was accurate on the day it was written and none has been touched since.
That is worth knowing generally. Arithmetic proves a table is internally coherent. Only a stated date proves it is current, which is why the cut-off sits above the table here.
India’s 256 was built without a single big innings
The second-highest total the tournament has seen contained no score above 55. Abhishek Sharma made 55 from 30 balls, Hardik Pandya 50 from 23, Tilak Varma 44 from 16 and Ishan Kishan 38 from 24, and Zimbabwe replied with 184 for 6 to lose by 72 at Chepauk.
Sri Lanka’s record was the opposite shape. Sanath Jayasuriya made 88 from 44 balls and Mahela Jayawardene 65 from 27, and the innings was finished off by Jehan Mubarak, who hit 46 from 13 including three sixes in a row off Lameck Onyango. Sri Lanka took 45 from the last two overs, then bowled Kenya out for 88 to win by 172.
Chepauk is the more surprising address of the two. Across the IPL, the MA Chidambaram Stadium is the one big Indian ground where scoring has not inflated: the first-innings average there sits at 165.6 all time and 165.1 since 2016, essentially flat, while Eden Gardens climbed from 169 to 181 over the same stretch. That is a different competition on the same square, but it is why a 256 in Chennai reads oddly.
The highest score in a T20 World Cup final
India’s 255 for 5 against New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium on 8 March 2026 is the biggest total made in a final, and it is not a close-run thing. Sanju Samson made 89 from 46, Ishan Kishan 54 from 25 and Abhishek Sharma 52 from 21. New Zealand were bowled out for 159 and India won by 96 runs.
Before that, no final had produced more than India’s 176 for 7 against South Africa in 2024, and that was the highest of the nine finals played between 2007 and 2024. Several were a long way below it: Sri Lanka were bowled out for 101 in 2012 and India made 130 for 4 in 2014. The 96-run margin is the largest by runs in a final too, past West Indies’ 36-run win over Sri Lanka in that 2012 match.
India’s win completed a double no side had managed before. They became the first team to win the T20 World Cup three times, and the first to win two in succession.
A semi-final worth 499 runs
The match that gave the list two of its top six was India against England at the Wankhede on 5 March. India made 253 for 7, with Samson making 89 again, this time from 42 balls. England got to 246 for 7 and lost by seven runs.
England got there on the back of Jacob Bethell’s 105 from 48 balls, and still lost. That 246 is the highest total any side has made and lost at a T20 World Cup. The previous mark belonged to South Africa’s 229 for 4 in 2016, which is the ninth row of the table above and was also chased down.
The highest successful chase, and why it is not from 2026
The biggest target hauled in at a T20 World Cup is still England’s, at the Wankhede on 18 March 2016. South Africa made 229 for 4, and England got there in 19.4 overs at 230 for 8. Hashim Amla, JP Duminy and Quinton de Kock all passed fifty in the first innings and it was not enough.
None of the giant 2026 totals was chased. Zimbabwe managed 184 for 6 against India’s 256 and 147 against West Indies’ 254, and New Zealand were bowled out in the final. The scores went up; the replies did not follow.
How much the scoring actually moved
Ball-by-ball records cover every edition from 2014 onward, and across those six tournaments there have been 21 totals of 200 or more. Thirteen came in 2026 alone. The other five editions produced eight between them: three in 2016, two in 2022, three in 2024 and none at all in 2014 or 2021.
Set against the 98 innings played in 2026, that is a 200-plus total in roughly one innings in seven, at a tournament spread across eight venues in two countries. Some of it is the fixture list. Oman conceded two of the ten biggest totals in the space of three days, Sri Lanka making 225 for 5 at Pallekele on 12 February and Ireland 235 for 5 at the SSC two days later, with Lorcan Tucker unbeaten on 94. But the fixture list does not explain a semi-final or a final.
The number worth holding on to is the run rate. Sri Lanka’s 260 is 13 an over for the full 20, which is why it has lasted. India’s 256 is 12.8, and their 255 in the final is 12.75.
