Al-Nassr went in at 2-2 with Al-Kholood on Thursday, and the visitors had scored in first-half stoppage time to get there. Then Cristiano Ronaldo scored three goals in 15 minutes, and Ange Postecoglou’s side won 5-3.
The hat-trick took Ronaldo to 985 career goals by the count most outlets use. He needs 15 more for 1,000.
A first half Al-Nassr never controlled
Ronaldo had the ball in the net around the tenth minute, but it was ruled out for offside. Al-Kholood went ahead through Julien Domingues in the 16th minute. Des Buckingham’s side had lost their previous four league games, and for a while they looked like they could take something home anyway.
João Félix was the one who pulled Al-Nassr back into it. He combined with Ângelo Gabriel for the equaliser in the 24th minute and laid one off for Sadio Mané to put Al-Nassr ahead in the 38th. Al-Kholood answered two minutes into stoppage time through Antoin Essomba. So it was 2-2 at the break, at home, against a side on a four-game losing run.
Félix makes four, Ronaldo makes three
Félix set up the next two as well. In the 66th minute he got into the box and found Ronaldo, who finished for 3-2. In the 72nd he beat his man on the right and lifted in a cross that Ronaldo headed home. Four assists in one game, and Ronaldo was not done.
The third came in the 81st minute. Mané was denied one-on-one by the Al-Kholood goalkeeper, kept hold of it and squared for Ronaldo, who made it 5-2. Domingues scored his second from the penalty spot in the last minute of stoppage time after a VAR check, but it only changed the margin.
Where it leaves the table
The win lifts Al-Nassr to 28 points from 11 games, second in the table. Al-Qadsiah are top on goal difference after beating Al-Riyadh 6-0 the same night, but they have played a game more. Al-Hilal are third on 27 with ten played, so the order could change again when they host Al-Fateh on Saturday.
For Buckingham, the former Mumbai City coach, it is a fifth league defeat in a row. Al-Kholood started the season with six unbeaten games and are now 10th on 12 points.
