Milan led 2-1 at half-time, and Mbangula’s hat-trick handed Amorim his first Serie A defeat before the derby

AC Milan were 2-1 up against Bologna at half-time at San Siro on Wednesday night. By the 62nd minute they were 3-2 down, and Samuel Mbangula’s third goal four minutes from time made it 4-2. It is Milan’s first league defeat of the season, and Ruben Amorim’s first in Serie A as their coach.

It is also Bologna’s first Serie A win at San Siro in more than ten years. Milan stay fifth on 18 points, seven behind Inter and Lazio, and the next game is the derby against Inter at the same ground on Saturday.

Cissé scored twice, and it still went wrong

Mbangula opened the scoring in the eighth minute. Milan’s answer came from their press. Six minutes later Omari Hutchinson won the ball high up the pitch, and Alphadjo Cissé went through one-on-one and beat Łukasz Skorupski. On 27 minutes Fikayo Tomori crossed and Cissé got to it at the far post for his second of the night.

Tomori was hurt before half-time, though, and Luka Modrić came on for him at the break. Amorim said afterwards that Tomori’s problem would have to be assessed before Saturday.

The game turned in the space of two minutes. On the hour, Juan Miranda’s free-kick from the left went in off Davide Bartesaghi. Mbangula then put Bologna back in front in the 62nd minute. Milan pushed for a third and Francesco Camarda headed just wide, but Jens Odgaard got in behind and squared for Mbangula to finish the hat-trick on 86 minutes.

Amorim: “a lack of energy”

Amorim did not hide behind the absentees. “What I felt from the first minute was a lack of energy and clarity in the way we managed the ball,” he said after the game. To DAZN, he said the injuries were “not a justification” and that some of the errors came from tiredness rather than technique.

He also pointed to how new all this still is. “It is difficult in two months to respect all the requests of a coach,” he said. That is a fair point in October. It will be a harder one to make if Inter, who are unbeaten after nine games, beat them on Saturday as well.

On loan from Werder Bremen

Mbangula came through the Juventus academy and joined Werder Bremen in 2025. He left Germany on deadline day, 1 September, on a season-long loan to Bologna that carries an option to buy. This was his first hat-trick. “I hope it won’t be my last,” he said.

Raffaele Palladino’s side had also won 2-0 at Cagliari on Saturday, and this result lifts them to 11th on 11 points.

Milan have very little time to put it right. The derby kicks off at 1:15am IST on Sunday, and a Europa League game against Ferencváros and a trip to Genoa follow soon after.
