Sporting Club Delhi have led in all three of their ISL games, and Vallejo’s 95th-minute equaliser left them with one point

Sporting Club Delhi have now led in all three of their Indian Super League games, and they have one point to show for it. Juan Peña put them ahead at Fatorda on Wednesday night, and they held that lead until the fifth minute of stoppage time, when Álex Vallejo turned in a free-kick to give FC Goa a 1-1 draw.

It was the first point of the season for Tomasz Tchórz’s side. It was also the first game this season in which Chiki has not scored for Goa.

Goa had the chances, Delhi had the goal

Goa came into this having gone out of the AFC Challenge League in Kuwait, and they played like a side that wanted something to cheer. Samsanga went close at the far post in the eighth minute and had a goal ruled out for offside in the 19th after Francisco Feuillassier played him through. Muhammed Nemil fired over in the 37th.

The best chance of the opening minutes after half-time also fell to Goa. Nemil found Feuillassier inside the six-yard box, and Delhi goalkeeper Nora Fernandes made the save. Delhi made them pay soon after. Peña finished a quick counter-attack with his right foot, and the visitors were ahead.

The fifth minute of added time

Chiki had the chance to level in the first minute of stoppage time, after a Delhi error let Vallejo cross, and he missed the target. Four minutes later Goa won a free-kick. Feuillassier swung it in, and Vallejo got in front of the goalkeeper to steer it home.

Delhi have a habit of this. They were 2-1 up at half-time against Bengaluru FC on the opening day and lost 3-2, and they led Mohun Bagan Super Giant in New Delhi before losing 2-1. Holding a lead for more than 40 minutes and still dropping two points is a new way of doing it.

Two draws for Goa

Goa are unbeaten in the league after two games, both 1-1 draws at home, but they have still not kept a clean sheet this season. Gouramangi Singh’s side face Inter Kashi next, on 1 November. Delhi go to Mumbai City, where Manolo Márquez is now in charge. He won the ISL with this club in 2022, when it was still Hyderabad FC.

I would not read too much into Goa’s unbeaten start. Two home draws and five games in a row without a clean sheet looks like a side getting away with it. Delhi have the opposite problem, and three games in, they are the better story. They keep doing the hard part and failing at the easy one.
