Lyon’s captain walked to the ultras’ end to face down a banner, and then he scored the fourth

Lyon’s Ligue 1 match with Rennes was stopped for fifteen minutes in the first half after a banner went up in the home ultras’ end. Corentin Tolisso went to speak to the supporters himself, then finished off a 4-0 win.

Lyon’s captain walked to the ultras’ end to face down a banner, and then he scored the fourth

Lyon were two goals up and coasting when the game stopped having anything to do with football. In the 36th minute at the Groupama Stadium, referee Mathieu Vernice took both sets of players off the pitch. When they came back, fifteen minutes later, Lyon scored twice more and beat Rennes 4-0.

What actually happened in the 36th minute

A banner went up in the Virage Nord, the home ultras’ end, carrying abuse aimed at Saint-Etienne. Chanting followed it. The stadium announcer read out two warnings over the public address system and put the message on the big screens, and the chanting carried on regardless.

The match delegate went to Vernice, and Vernice sent everyone to the dressing rooms. Before that happened, Lyon captain Corentin Tolisso walked the length of the pitch to the Virage Nord and stood in front of the supporters’ groups to talk to them directly. Paulo Fonseca, the Lyon manager, went over as well. Club officials Matthieu Louis-Jean and Michael Gerlinger made their own way to the section to see what was on the banner. It was taken down.

Reports in France have described the chanting as racist. What the banner itself said, in Spanish, was crude rivalry abuse directed at Lyon’s neighbours rather than anything about a player. No sanction or formal investigation had been announced by Sunday morning.

The game restarted and Lyon finished it off

Ernest Nuamah had scored twice before any of it, on seven minutes and on 30, and Lyon went in 2-0 up. Zachary Athekame made it three on 48 minutes, then set up the fourth for Tolisso on 76.

Athekame is the interesting one here. He arrived on loan from AC Milan on 14 August with no option to buy, which is the sort of deal that usually produces a season of quiet competence from a full-back. Five Ligue 1 matches in he has two goals and two assists.

Tolisso finished with a Sofascore rating of 9.3, the highest on the pitch. He had gone to face down his own supporters and then scored the goal that put the game to bed, which is a strange hour’s work by any standard.

Rennes came into this above Lyon

Rennes started the weekend third on ten points, two clear of Lyon in fifth. They leave it behind them: Lyon are on 11, Rennes are still on ten, and the round is not finished yet, so the final positions will depend on Sunday’s games.

Four goals and a clean sheet against a side that had been sitting above them is Lyon’s best afternoon of the season so far. It is also not the thing anyone will remember about it.
