Carrick says Bruno Fernandes keeps the armband, and Manchester United go to Chelsea one point above the drop zone

Bruno Fernandes is still Manchester United’s captain, and he is expected back in the side at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Michael Carrick settled the first part on Thursday, four days after leaving him on the bench for the whole of the 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth. Asked whether Fernandes could lose the armband, Carrick said there was no decision to make.

Kick-off against Chelsea is at 12:30pm UK time, 6pm in India. United go into it 16th in the Premier League, one point above the relegation zone.

Talked out at Carrington

Fernandes was dropped after the 4-1 Champions League defeat at Como, when he said the tactics were “on the manager and on the staff to see it, it’s not on me.” Carrick called the Bournemouth call a football decision at the time and has not moved from that. The two have since had clear-the-air talks at the training ground, and on Thursday Carrick described his captain as “fully committed to this football club” and said he would keep leading the team.

Whether that holds up after a defeat in London is another matter. The Athletic reported on Tuesday that Sir Jim Ratcliffe, chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox had decided after Monday’s meeting to give Carrick and the players more time. Carrick, for his part, has said he does not need reassurance from above and that only winning will end the talk about his job.

Two sides short of a striker

United still have no fit centre-forward. Benjamin Sesko has a shin injury and is expected to be out until January, and Manuel Ugarte, Patrick Dorgu and Luke Shaw are missing too. Kobbie Mainoo is back in training, which is about the only good news on the list.

Chelsea are without João Pedro, who has a thigh injury. Cole Palmer is available again after serving his one-match ban on Wednesday at Anfield, where Xabi Alonso’s side drew 1-1 with Liverpool and went out of the Carabao Cup on penalties.

Seven points from eight games

United’s start is their worst since 1986-87, and they have gone eight matches without a win in all competitions. The one league win came on 30 August, 5-2 against Ipswich at Old Trafford, and Fernandes scored a hat-trick that day. That is the player Carrick needs on Saturday.

Chelsea are fifth with 13 points, six more than United, though they lost 2-0 at home to Tottenham last weekend. The recent history is on United’s side. They won both league meetings last season, 2-1 at Old Trafford in September and 1-0 at Stamford Bridge in April.

I’m not convinced the board’s patience survives another bad afternoon, whatever was agreed on Monday. Carrick has kept his captain. He now needs his captain to win him a game.
