Pele, one of the players most often called the God of football, is regarded as one of the best to ever play the sport. He was an absolute treat to watch in his playing days. While mesmerising the world with his flicks and tricks, Pele was also a highly efficient goal-scorer.

Pele scored 77 goals in 92 international games for Brazil, a national record he held for more than 50 years until Neymar passed it in September 2023. He was also prolific at the club level, netting 643 goals in 659 games for Santos, making him their all-time top goal-scorer.

The Brazilian legend was adept at scoring with either foot and his head, while averaging almost a goal per game in his career. Pele also had the ability to create opportunities for other players with his vision and passing.

At the FIFA World Cup, Pele ranks eighth in the all-time top goal-scorers list with 12 goals, and he is still the only player to win the trophy three times. He never finished a tournament as its top scorer, and the Golden Ball for the best player was only introduced in 1982, long after he retired. His four goals at the 1970 World Cup helped Brazil to their third title.

Pele passed away on December 29, 2022, following a long battle with cancer. Let’s look at the legend’s exploits at FIFA World Cups.

Pele World Cup goals

Wearing the iconic no. 10 yellow jersey, Pele scored 12 goals in 14 matches across four editions of the FIFA World Cup, with an average of 0.86 goals per game.

He smashed his first goal in the competition in the quarter-final of the 1958 edition. Netting in the 66th minute, the goal proved to be the match-winner against Wales. In the semi-final, Pele’s three goals powered Brazil past France and into the final. Two more goals in the 5-2 win over Sweden in the final made it his most prolific edition and won his nation the trophy.

Pele scored only two goals combined in the 1962 and 1966 editions, finding the back of the net in the opening games of the campaigns, against Mexico and Bulgaria.

The 1970 edition was his final appearance in the FIFA World Cup. Pele scored three goals in the group stage, one against Czechoslovakia and two against Romania, before heading the opening goal in the 4-1 win over Italy in the final.

Pele’s 12 goals came in only 14 matches, but seven players have now scored more at the World Cup. Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi both went past Miroslav Klose’s old record of 16 at the 2026 World Cup.

Pele FIFA World Cup records

Pele set multiple records in the 1958 edition, which was successful for both him and the Brazilian national football team.

He made his World Cup debut in the group stage match against the Soviet Union, aged 17 years and 235 days. At the time he was the youngest player ever to appear at a World Cup; Northern Ireland’s Norman Whiteside took that record in 1982, aged 17 years and 41 days. Four days after his debut, Pele became the youngest goal-scorer in the tournament’s history, scoring against Wales aged 17 years and 239 days.

Just five days later, Pele became the youngest player to score a hat-trick at the FIFA World Cup, when his second-half goals guided Brazil past France. In the final against Sweden, aged 17 years and 249 days, he became the youngest player to appear in a World Cup final, the youngest goal-scorer in a final and the youngest World Cup winner. All of those records still stand.

The Golden Ball did not exist in 1958, so there was no official best-player award. Pele was named in the Swedish Football Association’s All-Star Team of the tournament, and a later FIFA online vote picked him as the best young player of the 1958 World Cup.

Assist counts from Pele’s era vary from source to source, because nobody kept official assist records at the time. On Opta’s criteria, Lionel Messi now holds the record for the most assists in the FIFA World Cup, with 12. Pele still shares one assist record: he set up two goals in the 1970 final, for Jairzinho and Carlos Alberto, and no player has more assists in World Cup finals.

Last, but not the least, Pele won three FIFA World Cup titles (1958, 1962 and 1970), the most by any player in the tournament’s history. A total of 20 other players have won the trophy twice.
