Lionel Messi has the most assists in FIFA World Cup history with 12. He broke a record he had shared with Diego Maradona during the 2026 tournament, and he now sits at the top of both the World Cup’s all-time assist list and its all-time scoring list.

Below the top of that list, though, the published rankings stop agreeing with each other — and that is worth explaining before the table rather than after it.

Why the lists disagree

Goals have been recorded since the first World Cup in 1930. Assists have not. There is no single official register of who laid on what for the early tournaments, so the totals you see have been reconstructed after the fact from match reports and archive footage, and different compilers have made different judgement calls about what counts as the decisive pass.

The result is a list that is firm at the top and soft in the middle. Messi’s 12 and Maradona’s 8 are recent enough to be documented beyond argument. Pele’s total swings between six and eight depending on the source. Didi, the Brazil playmaker who won the World Cup in 1958 and 1962, is placed second all-time on nine assists by one compilation and left out of the top group entirely by another.

None of that makes any individual list wrong. It does mean that a page which prints one set of numbers as settled fact is telling you less than it appears to. Where the sources disagree above, we have given the range instead of picking a side.

How Messi took the record

Messi went into the 2026 World Cup on eight assists, level with Diego Maradona at the top of the list. He added four more across the tournament.

The ninth came in the round of 16 against Egypt, in a match Argentina won after falling behind, and it broke the tie he had held with Maradona since 2022. The two that mattered most came in the semi-final against England. Messi did not score in that game but set up both goals in a 2-1 win, threading the pass for Enzo Fernandez to equalise late and then delivering the cross that Lautaro Martinez headed in deep into stoppage time.

That night also shaped the Golden Boot race. Messi and Kylian Mbappe went into the final weekend level on eight goals apiece, and the tournament’s first tie-break is assists — which is how a record for creating goals ended up deciding a prize for scoring them. Mbappe’s brace in the third-place play-off eventually took him to 10 goals and the Golden Boot instead, with Argentina beaten 1-0 by Spain in the final.

Messi leads the World Cup’s scoring list too

The assist record is only half of what he did in North America. Messi’s goals at the 2026 tournament carried him past Miroslav Klose to become the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer, ending a mark of 16 that the German had held since 2014.

So the same player now sits top of both lists at once. It is a neat answer to an old argument about what kind of player he is: across six tournaments Messi has been credited with more decisive passes than anyone and more goals than anyone.

The playmakers behind him

Diego Maradona is the one name on the list whose reputation rests as much on the passing as the scoring. He managed eight goals and eight assists across four tournaments, and in 1986 he was directly involved in 10 of the 14 goals Argentina scored on the way to the title — five goals and five assists.

Pele won the World Cup three times and remains the most-quoted name in any World Cup record discussion, which is exactly why the spread on his assist total matters. He was a genuine creator as well as a finisher, particularly in the 1970 side, but the precise number is not something the archives can settle.

Pierre Littbarski reached the final in all three of his tournaments with West Germany — 1982, 1986 and 1990 — winning the last of them, and contributed seven assists and three goals in 18 matches.

Grzegorz Lato is better remembered for winning the Golden Boot in 1974, when Poland finished third, but he created as well as scored and sits in the seven-assist group.
