India’s Free Fire wait goes on as LYON win the World Cup in Paris
India’s Free Fire hopes rested on S8UL, Apex and Total Gaming in Paris. All three fell short as LYON of Mexico were crowned world champions.

India sent three of its biggest names to Paris for the Free Fire World Cup, and all three came home empty-handed. S8UL Esports, Team Apex Gaming and Total Gaming Esports each made the trip to the tournament that carried the sport’s Esports World Cup crown, and none of them got close to it. The title instead went to LYON, the Mexican side who were crowned world champions for the first time in the organisation’s history.
LYON close it out in the seventh final
The grand finals in Paris ran on the Champion Rush format, where a team has to push past a set points threshold and then close out a Booyah to be declared champion. LYON were the side who managed it. They crossed the mark and sealed the win with a Booyah in the seventh match of the finals, holding off eleven rivals to lift the trophy.
It is the first world title for the organisation, a landmark result in a scene long led by Brazil, Thailand and Indonesia. All Gamers Global of Thailand finished as runners-up.
S8UL flatter to deceive
S8UL carried the loudest Indian following into Paris, and for a while they justified it. They came through the Survival Stage in fourth place with 151 points and two Booyahs across ten matches, one of the stronger runs of that phase and just enough to book a grand-finals seat — Team Vitality finished only three points behind in fifth.
The finals were a different game. The scoring resets, the lobby is tougher, and the margins are thinner, and S8UL could not find the same rhythm. They finished 11th of the twelve grand finalists with 54 points, the best of the three Indian sides but a long way short of the podium they had looked capable of reaching a day earlier.
Apex and Total Gaming fall away
Team Apex Gaming, the organisation BGMI star Jonathan launched earlier this year, ended 12th with 41 points, just behind S8UL. Total Gaming Esports had the roughest week of the trio. They never found their footing and bowed out in the Survival Stage, finishing in the bottom half of the overall standings without reaching the grand finals.
None of it was for want of support. Indian fans backed all three teams hard through the Paris run, loud on every stream and feed. The results just did not follow.
The global gap is still there
The takeaway is a familiar one for Indian Free Fire. The country produces huge audiences and genuine talent, and its teams can hang with anyone across a group or a survival bracket. Converting that into a deep finals run against the best of Brazil, Thailand and now Latin America is the step that keeps eluding them.
There is time to close it. These rosters are young and the calendar keeps turning up new chances to try. For now, though, the Free Fire world title sits in Mexico, and India’s wait for a first one goes on.
