Rahane’s retirement leaves KKR a captaincy call, and Rinku Singh is the frontrunner

Ajinkya Rahane’s retirement on Thursday ended his playing career, and it also left Kolkata Knight Riders without a captain for IPL 2027. He had the job in 2025 and 2026. The franchise has one season left in the current three-year cycle to work out whether the replacement is already in the dressing room or has to be bought.

Rinku is the obvious name, and that is not the same as the safe one

Rinku Singh was made KKR vice-captain for the first time before IPL 2026, and the club was fairly open about why. “Over the years, we’ve seen Rinku Singh evolve not only as a cricketer but also as a leader,” head coach Abhishek Nayar said ahead of that season. “We wanted a little more responsibility for Rinku to shoulder and I feel it’s the perfect time, after being a World Cup champion, to come in, take on that responsibility and help Ajinkya Rahane take the reins over.”

Read that again and it sounds less like a compliment and more like a plan. You do not describe a deputy as someone the team looks to unless you have thought about what happens when the man above him goes.

His actual captaincy record is better than most people assume. He captained Meerut Mavericks through the 2024 and 2025 UP T20 League seasons and won 13 of the 18 games he led, the franchise taking the title in 2024 and losing the 2025 final to Kashi Rudras. He has also captained Uttar Pradesh in List A cricket since taking over from Bhuvneshwar Kumar before the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy. That is a real body of work. It is also entirely outside the IPL, which is a different job with different cameras on it.

The alternatives both come with an asterisk

Sunil Narine is the other name that gets raised, and the logic is easy enough. He is 38, he has been at KKR since 2012 and has never turned out for anyone else in the IPL, and he is the leading wicket-taker among overseas bowlers in the tournament’s history, the first of them to reach 200. He has also never captained the side in all that time, which after this long stops looking like an oversight and starts looking like a decision somebody already made.

Rovman Powell is the outside bet. He captained West Indies 37 times in T20Is between 2023 and 2024, so the credential is genuine. The problem is his place: two games for KKR in IPL 2025, eleven in 2026. A captain who might not make the XI is not a captain, and I would be surprised if KKR went there.

Or they could just buy one

The third route is the market. KKR can trade for a captain up to a week before the auction, which usually lands in December, and again once it closes. The BCCI has not fixed the retention deadline yet, though it normally falls in November. Somebody who has led an IPL side before is a purchase, not a promotion, and it removes the risk of handing a first-timer a rebuild.

It also costs a slot and a lot of money for one season. That is the part worth sitting with, because 2027 is the last year of the 2025-27 cycle. Whatever KKR do next summer, they get to redo at the next mega auction anyway.

The rest of the reshuffle points one way

KKR finished seventh in 2026 on 13 points, six wins, seven defeats and a washout from 14 games at a net run rate of -0.147, alive in the playoff race until the final week and never really convincing in it. The response has already started off the field. Ryan ten Doeschate is on his way back as head of cricket strategy for the Knight Riders Group, a role that spans all four franchises under the banner, and it puts him alongside Nayar, who has been KKR head coach since IPL 2026.

Two of the three men shaping the cricket side have known Rinku for years and watched him grow into the deputy’s role on purpose. If KKR were planning to buy a captain, appointing a vice-captain in 2026 and talking about him that way was a strange use of a season. My read is that Rinku gets it, that the appointment is announced closer to the auction than to now, and that the honest reason is as much continuity as conviction. That is not a criticism. In the last year of a cycle, continuity might be exactly the right thing to buy.
