Tanush Kotian took 11 wickets in his 50th first-class game, and Mumbai have three bonus-point wins from three

Tanush Kotian had never taken ten wickets in a first-class match. He did it in his 50th, against Haryana at the MCA’s BKC ground, and then some: 11 for 151 in the match, with a career-best 8 for 81 in the second innings. Mumbai won by 10 wickets on Thursday, their third bonus-point win in three games, and Siddhesh Lad’s side are top of Elite Group D with 21 points. No team in the Ranji Trophy has more.

Musheer first

Before Kotian got going, Musheer Khan had already done a week’s work. He made 109 off 185 balls in Mumbai’s 430, alongside Angkrish Raghuvanshi, whose 114 was his maiden first-class hundred. Then the 21-year-old bowled 31 overs of left-arm spin and took 6 for 85 as Haryana were all out for 270. Kotian took 3 for 70. Nishant Sindhu, batting at No. 3, was left on 105 not out after facing 251 balls.

Musheer is only the sixth Mumbai player to score a hundred and take five wickets in the same Ranji Trophy match, and the first since Ravi Shastri against Madhya Pradesh in 1990-91. The 160-run lead let Lad enforce the follow-on, and Haryana closed the third day on 73 for 2, still 87 behind.

Eight in the second innings

Haryana made Mumbai work for it on the last day. They were in the middle of an eighth-wicket stand that added 81 over nearly two hours on a slow pitch. Once it was broken they were all out for 256 in the second session. Musheer finished with 2 for 75 to go with his six in the first innings. The other eight were Kotian’s.

“It’s a relief,” he said afterwards. “I think this is the first time I’ve bowled this much in a match, around 40-50 overs.”

Mumbai needed 97. Raghuvanshi took 39 balls over 67 not out, Divyaansh Saxena made 30 not out off 25, and the game was over in 10.4 overs.

Still uncapped at 28

Kotian was added to India’s squad for the last two Tests of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy after R Ashwin retired midway through the tour. He did not play, and he still has not. When Washington Sundar’s hamstring opened up a spot for the Sri Lanka Tests in July, the selectors went to Madhya Pradesh’s Saransh Jain, who is 33.

Kotian says that is not on his mind and that Jain is doing well too. What he does talk about is that Australia trip, where Nathan Lyon worked with him on his run-up and on bowling with more overspin, and he named Ravindra Jadeja and Morne Morkel among the people he has picked things up from since. I’m not sure 11 wickets against Haryana changes an India selection meeting on its own. It does make him hard to leave out of the conversation.

Mumbai beat Chandigarh by an innings and 155 runs at the Wankhede in the first round and Himachal Pradesh by an innings and 97 in Bilaspur in the second. Next is Railways from 2 November. Railways are the home side, but they are playing their home games at the Brabourne Stadium this season, so Mumbai only have to go across town.
