Rashid Khan’s 5 for 17 bowls out the Super Giants and sends MI London second

MI London put 183 for 6 on the board at The Oval on Sunday, then handed the ball to Rashid Khan. He took five wickets for 17 runs, Manchester Super Giants were bowled out for 138 with five balls unused, and a 45-run win pushed MI London into second place in the men’s Hundred table.

Rashid’s five-for decides it

Five for 17 is the sort of return that ends an innings rather than dents it. Rashid was named player of the match, and the Super Giants never got near the rate they needed once he had gone through them.

Aiden Markram was the one batter who made anything of the chase. The Super Giants captain reached fifty for the first time in the competition, and it was the only score of note in the innings. He ran out of partners long before the target came into range.

Jacks and Pooran build the total

Markram had put MI London in, which is the orthodox call at a ground where chasing usually pays. It stopped looking orthodox once Will Jacks and Nicholas Pooran got going. Jacks made 62, Pooran 54, and between them they lifted MI London to a total that was above par for the surface.

That was the margin of the match in the end. The cushion meant Rashid could attack from his first ball rather than bowl to protect a modest score, and 45 runs is a lot to concede in a format where 100 balls rarely leave room to recover.

Where it leaves the table

MI London now sit second with 12 points from five matches and a net run rate of 0.399. Welsh Fire have the same points from a game fewer, but a net run rate of -0.222 drops them to third. Trent Rockets remain top on 16 points from five.

The Super Giants are the other side of that ledger. Two wins from five leaves them fifth on eight points, and they have now lost two of their last three after Finn Allen chased them down at Old Trafford on Friday. There has been enough with the bat to stay in games, not enough to close them.

Rashid has been on the franchise circuit long enough that a haul from him stops being a surprise. Five for 17 is still a rare night by any standard, and Indian viewers watching between IPL seasons got the version of him that clubs bid against each other for.
