Rachin Ravindra hurt his shoulder at a Sky TV shoot, and he and Mark Chapman will miss New Zealand’s ODIs against India

New Zealand will start their five-match ODI series against India at Eden Park on Wednesday without Rachin Ravindra or Mark Chapman. New Zealand Cricket confirmed that both will miss the whole series.

Ravindra’s is the odder story. He dislocated his right shoulder in September diving for a catch during a promotional shoot with Sky TV, which NZC performance manager Mike Sandle called a freak accident, and it had already kept him out of the T20I series India won 3-2. New Zealand had hoped he would be fit for the one-dayers, and he is not quite there.

Head coach Rob Walter said the shoulder “hasn’t quite recovered” enough for him to field comfortably in white-ball cricket, and with two Tests against India to come later this month, New Zealand do not want to “take any undue risks”.

Chapman’s problem is his left hamstring. A recent MRI showed he needs another two weeks of rehabilitation.

Nicholls, Foxcroft and Seifert come in

Henry Nicholls joins for the first three ODIs, days after making 119 for Canterbury against Wellington in the Ford Trophy. It was his 13th List A hundred. Dean Foxcroft, who played in New Zealand’s recent ODIs against the West Indies, covers the last two games and joins once the New Zealand A red-ball series against India A is over.

Tim Seifert had been picked only for the fourth and fifth matches and is now in for all five. Matt Fisher, also named for the last two, stays with the squad throughout as an extra bowling option, and Matt Henry joined up with the group to be assessed on whether he is ready to play.

“Everyone knows what an asset Mark and Rachin are to this side, so it’s a shame they have to miss this series,” Walter said. He described Nicholls as “no stranger to this side”.

What New Zealand still have

Mitchell Santner captains a squad for the first three games that still has Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips and Will Young in the top and middle order, with Tom Latham keeping wicket. On paper that is still a deep batting order.

India will take any help they can get in New Zealand. They have not won an ODI there since 3 February 2019, and our India vs New Zealand ODI series guide has the full record at all four grounds.

The first ODI starts at 3pm local time on Wednesday 4 November, which is 7:30am IST. The series then moves to Wellington on 7 November and Hamilton on 10 November, and finishes with two games at Mount Maunganui on 13 and 15 November.
