Neither CPL finalist has won the title, and one of them lost more league games than it won

The Caribbean Premier League will have a name on the trophy on Monday morning that has never been there before. Antigua and Barbuda Falcons play Jamaica Kingsmen at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown on Sunday evening in Barbados, which is 4.30am IST on Monday for anyone in India planning to be up for it. Neither side has won the competition. Neither has been in a final.

The Kingsmen lost more league games than they won

Jamaica finished fourth in the ten-game league stage with four wins and six defeats. Eight points, a negative net run rate, and the last qualifying place. Then they beat Barbados Tridents in the Eliminator and Guyana Amazon Warriors in Qualifier 2, the second of those a chase of 207 that Rovman Powell finished himself with 40 not out from 17 balls.

This is the franchise’s first CPL season. Jamaica had been out of the league for two years after the Tallawahs were sold back to the organisers, and the Kingsmen arrived this year as the seventh team, owned by the American group behind the Pakistan Super League side of the same name. Winning it at the first attempt, from fourth, would be a strange way to start.

The Falcons have been the better team all tournament

Antigua and Barbuda came second, six wins from nine completed matches, and then beat Guyana inside six overs in Qualifier 1 to book the final early. They have played once in the last 11 days. Whether that is rest or rust is the question every team in their position gets asked, and nobody knows the answer until the first over.

Moeen Ali captains them. Shadab Khan has been the tournament’s second most valuable player on the CPL’s own impact-points measure, behind only Sunil Narine, and he took four wickets including a hat-trick of googlies in the Qualifier. If the Kensington Oval surface grips at all, the Falcons have the spinners to use it.

There is a tidy piece of history in this fixture

The Falcons exist because the Jamaica Tallawahs stopped existing. The Tallawahs’ owner sold the franchise back to the league in late 2023 and bought the rights to a new team in Antigua instead, and that team became the Falcons in 2024. Three seasons on, the club that replaced Jamaica is playing Jamaica’s replacement for the title. Nobody planned that.

The sides who were supposed to be here are not

Guyana Amazon Warriors won eight of ten and topped the table by three points, then lost both playoff games on consecutive days and went home. Trinbago Knight Riders, the defending champions, finished seventh of seven with six points. Narine ends the season as the most valuable player in a team that came last, which is its own kind of summary.

A first-time winner is guaranteed either way. For a league that has spent most of its life being decided by Trinbago and Guyana, that on its own makes this worth setting an alarm for.
