IPL teams now have until 17 November to name their retentions, and the Goa auction stays on 16 December

The IPL 2027 retention deadline has been pushed back two days, from 15 November to 17 November, so it no longer falls on the day of India’s last ODI in New Zealand.

IPL teams now have until 17 November to name their retentions, and the Goa auction stays on 16 December

The original date clashed with cricket. The fifth and last ODI between New Zealand and India is at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on 15 November, and the deadline has been pushed back two days so it no longer lands on a match day. The auction itself has not moved. It is a one-day mini-auction in Goa on 16 December.

Once the lists are in, the IPL will send the franchises the pool of registered players to shortlist from. The final auction list, with the order of the sets, goes out on 3 December.

Two more days for the hard calls

Two extra days does not sound like much, but a few franchises have real decisions to make. Mumbai Indians still have to settle what to do with Hardik Pandya, their captain, who is paid ₹16.35 crore and has not played a competitive game since May. We argued last week that MI should trade him before the deadline, and that deadline is now 17 November.

Chennai Super Kings have the same kind of problem at a lower price. According to Cricbuzz, they may release Prashant Veer, the ₹14.2 crore allrounder who took no wickets in his first season, and try to buy him back cheaper in Goa.

Delhi have done both trades so far

Only two trades have gone through, and Delhi Capitals are in both. In June they brought back Rishabh Pant, their former captain, from Lucknow Super Giants and sent Kuldeep Yadav the other way. Pant took a big cut to go home. LSG had paid ₹27 crore for him at the 2025 auction, still the IPL record, and Delhi will pay him ₹15 crore. Kuldeep moved on his existing ₹13.5 crore.

On 14 October, Delhi then sent T Natarajan back to Sunrisers Hyderabad for the legspinner Zeeshan Ansari. Natarajan’s fee dropped from ₹10.75 crore to ₹5 crore in the move. Ansari went across on ₹40 lakh.

No dates for the season yet

The IPL has still not fixed the dates for 2027. When it set out windows for three seasons in 2024, it pencilled in 14 March to 30 May for this one. After the BCCI’s annual general meeting in September, secretary Devajit Saikia said the season could start towards the end of March.

December’s auction is also the last small one for a while. The next mega auction comes before the 2028 season, when squads will be broken up and rebuilt.

Keep track of every retention and release before the auction
