India’s Test squad for Sri Lanka lands on Tuesday, with Bumrah’s knee the big call
Ajit Agarkar’s panel has three days to work out how to handle Jasprit Bumrah’s knee and Washington Sundar’s hamstring before a two-Test tour that opens at Galle on 15 August.

India will name their Test squad for the tour of Sri Lanka by Tuesday, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said on Saturday. That gives Ajit Agarkar’s selection panel three days to settle a fitness question it cannot answer with any certainty yet, because Jasprit Bumrah’s left knee is still the loudest thing in the room.
Bumrah’s knee sets the timeline
Bumrah picked up an impact injury and reactive swelling on the knee during the second ODI against England in Cardiff, and sat out the decider at Lord’s. Four weeks separate that miss from the first ball at Galle, which sounds like plenty until you remember how carefully India ration his workload even when he is fully fit.
The squad announcement and the travel plan are two different things. India fly to Colombo on 4 August, and a bowler can be named in a squad without being on that flight. Seeing Bumrah on Tuesday’s list would not, by itself, settle whether he bowls at Galle on 15 August. He had already been rested for the one-off Test against Afghanistan before the knee flared up, which tells you where the management’s thinking was even before the injury.
The spin question is the interesting one
Washington Sundar is working his way back from a right hamstring strain and his availability is not confirmed, which matters more here than it would almost anywhere else. Galle turns from early and keeps turning, and a bowler who can hold an end and bat at seven is exactly the profile these two Tests demand.
Ravindra Jadeja, rested for that same Afghanistan Test, should come straight back in. Beyond him the shape of the spin attack is genuinely open, and how many frontline spinners India pick will tell you what they expect from the surfaces more clearly than anything anyone says at the announcement.
Two Tests, and a long build-up
Shubman Gill leads a side playing two Tests that count towards the World Test Championship. Galle hosts the first from 15 to 19 August, the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo the second from 23 to 27 August. Before any of that there is a four-day warm-up at the Nondescripts Cricket Club from 7 to 10 August, which is unusually generous preparation by modern touring standards and a fair sign of how seriously India are taking conditions they have not played a Test in for the best part of a decade.
Tuesday’s list will be read for its absences as much as its inclusions. Watch the pace group, because that is where a Bumrah call gets disguised as a cover selection.
